L'Avenir - cruising Europe's inland waterways. Exploring the canals and rivers of France, Belgium and Holland by boat. Chevroches, Canal du Nivernais. Tuesday, 27 August 2013. We are very lucky to have generous relatives who have looked after us well and now, as we tour around, we are in the hands of the Bed and Breakfast Brigade. For non planners, such as ourselves, B&B is a bit of a lottery- most of the time it will be fine, sometimes it will be good and very occasionally it will be dire. The owner of ...

L'Avenir - cruising Europe's inland waterways. Exploring the canals and rivers of France, Belgium and Holland by boat. Chevroches, Canal du Nivernais. Sunday, 23 June 2013. Thieves in the Night. I had intended this post to tell you how much we have enjoyed our stay in Dijon with its quaint medieval streets, handsome Place de la Liberation, imposing Palais des Ducs,. Perhaps we have just been lucky up until now. Perhaps there’s a boating themed stall hidden amongst the general rubbish and tat of the...
L'Avenir - cruising Europe's inland waterways: Living in Paris

L'Avenir - cruising Europe's inland waterways. Exploring the canals and rivers of France, Belgium and Holland by boat. Chevroches, Canal du Nivernais. Monday, 22 September 2014. Our recent cruise through Paris was rather more exciting than I would have liked. This was to be the second time we'd sailed beneath those famous bridges this year and the third time in total so we were feeling pretty relaxed and looking forward to the experience. I should know better by this time. Location: Paris, France. Map an...

L'Avenir - cruising Europe's inland waterways. Exploring the canals and rivers of France, Belgium and Holland by boat. Chevroches, Canal du Nivernais. Thursday, 2 October 2014. Geese 'having a gander' as we go through a lock. Baguette for breakfast (a coypu). Rogny les Sept Ecluses. We are leaving l'Avenir a couple of weeks earlier than originally planned in order to pay a visit to Scotland. The referendum may be over but the smirks and 'purrs' may be somewhat premature. Interesting times. Thanks for rea...

Sunday, 15 August 2010. Went to see Martin Creed's 'Down Over Up' exhibition at the Fruitmarket today. I was really interested in his ideas about ascending and descending and also his Scotsman Steps project. I wasn't really convinced by the work though. It's almost too obvious, but I'm pretty sure that's intentional and it's actually about the juxtaposition of the different works that becomes the work. The cactuses made me laugh, but I really didn't like the musical steps. The final thing I did was to ha...

L'Avenir - cruising Europe's inland waterways. Exploring the canals and rivers of France, Belgium and Holland by boat. Chevroches, Canal du Nivernais. Friday, 21 July 2017. Up and Down the Garonne. We have had 3 new crew members over the past couple of weeks. For the first week the heatwave continued and the second was constant rain and thunderstorms. Not sure which was worse but as our guests were from Scotland perhaps the rain was more bearable. Down on the Tarn. You'll find a Scotsman on the Moon.
