Cruising from San Diego to Seattle
Yachting Cazalea: July 2014
http://cazalea5.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Cruising from San Diego to Seattle. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Dock 6 to Dock 8. Our recent voyages have been short ones. Sunday we docked at an empty slip on Pier 6, as instructed via telephone by the Harbor Master. Just after we returned from our party cruise, we found an unhappy sport boat nipping around our stern, insisting we vacate immediately. I went back l ater to gather evidence of the splinters). We looked at each other, laughing. Fourteen hundred miles up the coast, 30 tie-ups in treacherous ...
Yachting Cazalea: August 2014
http://cazalea5.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Cruising from San Diego to Seattle. Tuesday, August 5, 2014. San Diego to Seattle: Stomachs View. We ate like kings" is overstating the quality of our food. Perhaps "we ate like state senators" would be an appropriate phrase, although we didn't have any constituents paying for our meals. First day's meal, when we thought the trip would be easy . When we realized it was NOT going to be easy, out came the Sapphire. Showing off for the camera. Shore crew ate well too. So we ate our own fish. We didn't negle...
Yachting Cazalea: Dealing With Ashes
http://cazalea5.blogspot.com/2015/07/dealing-with-ashes.html
Cruising from San Diego to Seattle. Friday, July 24, 2015. When a loved one dies, it's quite possible you might end up being asked to deal with their cremated remains. Apparently 44% of the people in the U.S. will be cremated this year. We put my mother's ashes into the Pacific 5 years ago, from the foredeck of Jason. Just 10 feet from where I am sitting now. My friend Steve (who was on the boat that day) just went to San Felipe, Mexico and sprinkled his uncle Robert Louis Hansen. I asked, "Whose? We wai...
Yachting Cazalea: Joyriding on Jason
http://cazalea5.blogspot.com/2015/07/joyriding-on-jason.html
Cruising from San Diego to Seattle. Thursday, July 30, 2015. Regular readers (both of them) know that we have been staying on the Motor Vessel Jason in Seattle. "Caretakers" would be a generous description and "freeloaders" a cynical one. Let's just say we are "Friends of Jason." Now is the appropriate time for those of you reading for the first time to ask, "What or Who is Jason? TIME FOR A BREAK - Typical photos showing the delights of boating in. The Puget Sound area. We took it out for a short ride o...
Yachting Cazalea: Making of a New Maridel
http://cazalea5.blogspot.com/2015/12/making-of-new-maridel.html
Cruising from San Diego to Seattle. Monday, December 21, 2015. Making of a New Maridel. Gary (even before the sale) had his eyes on another Stephens yacht, the Sedan Cruiser known as MARIDEL. At 36 feet it is 11 feet shorter than Jason, and missing one bedroom/bathroom (or in nautical terms, a stateroom and head). It's also missing an inside steering station. But it has lots of nifty features, and we can describe them going forward in this blog. The vinyl on the bench is gone, replaced by a tastefully up...

Typhoon Cazalea: Heavy Seas and High Winds
http://cazalea6.blogspot.com/2014/10/heavy-seas-and-high-winds.html
Sunday, October 12, 2014. Heavy Seas and High Winds. We have wind-whipped seas of 3-5 feet and gale winds at a steady 45-50 knots with gusts to 63. And that's just on the pool deck! I talked to one of the officers who said we are listing to starboard a few degrees due to the lateral wind forces, and we're being forced onto a course heading less favorable than they would like, due to those winds. At least the seas are relatively flat. More later - it's 3 hours later and here's what we see outside:. Goodby...

Typhoon Cazalea: Visiting Japan During a Typhoon - why not?
http://cazalea6.blogspot.com/2014/10/visiting-japan-during-typhoon-why-not.html
Sunday, October 5, 2014. Visiting Japan During a Typhoon - why not? I've spent a lot of time on the water in the past 6 months, and fair amount of time avoiding storms. You may have read about some of those activities on Yachting Cazalea, another of my blogs. But this trip tops our cruise to Seattle. On this trip we have run into two hurricanes, or as they are called in the Pacific Ocean " TYPHOONS. Windy and Rainy are their characteristics. Notice the woman behind Laurie? Is our home. I curate. Whaling Cazalea: In search of the great whales
http://cazalea4.blogspot.com/2013/06/greetings-marine-mammal-fans-ill-be.html
Thursday, June 13, 2013. In search of the great whales. Greetings, marine mammal fans! I'll be your captain today as we set off on a voyage of discovery near San Diego. We'll see plenty of small toothed whales (aka "Dolphins"). Pinnepeds (aka sea lions). Pelecanus Occidentalis (brown pelicans). And often we see other strange "marine" intruders as well. Like this weird black sea nettle jellyfish. The largest invertebrate discovered in the 20th century. It was only classified in 1997!

Typhoon Cazalea: Our first look at Japan
http://cazalea6.blogspot.com/2014/10/our-first-looks-at-japan.html
Sunday, October 5, 2014. Our first look at Japan. You will notice lots of temples, trees, trails and steps. Our small group of 10 is made up of folks in their 60's to 80's. By and large they don't like flights of steps, walking long distances, or taking off their shoes every 15 minutes. Ah well, how were we to know that's the essence of being a tourist in Japan? This is our coach - coming to pick us up. Here's the view from inside (but hanging out the window). I got reprimanded for this - unsafe!
Curating Cazalea: January 2012
http://cazalea.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 29, 2012. What is it about Bright Colors? I feel that it's time for a colorful post. I'm going to run my curator's eye over a collection of bright and brilliant art that we have assembled. Bright colors appeal to me. (Is it genetic? Inherited from the Mexican side of my family? I like these flowers assembled for my mother-in-law's memorial service. And this rubber Michelin Man clock I got in Paris about 20 years ago. This painting makes me think twice. " No, eye gouging won't help. Shoppe...
Whaling Cazalea: 1000 Whales - The Book Journey Continues
http://cazalea4.blogspot.com/2014/02/1000-whales-book-journey-continues.html
Thursday, February 20, 2014. 1000 Whales - The Book Journey Continues. I mentioned in my last blog a month ago that I'd written about finding 1000 whales in one year. The book is now for sale in multiple formats and locations. You can buy it in print, from me; in a special cover version from the Hornblower Cruises company; or from a friend who has read and tired of it, or online in the iBook store. I started up a website called 1 K in 1 Yr. And people like to see whale flukes or tails:.

Thursday, January 1, 2015. Friday, March 30, 2012. Buying Books, Badly. Within my great collector universe, I have a niche where I express myself as a somewhat-compulsive book buyer. Is it because I have been a voracious reader since early childhood? Or because my mother and sister taught reading? Or because I was in the publishing business all my life? I don't know exactly why I buy books. Great Books of the Western World. Gift from mom circa 1965). But I do know this:. I don't like frequenting libraries.

Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Another lovely day in Paradise. I suppose the title of this blog is misleading. Our city is still waiting to elect a new mayor, our civic finances are shaky, airplane noise from the airport fills the gaps between the dogs' continual barking, and the streets still aren't repaved from last year's sewer pipe replacement project. It's the end of January, the State of the Union is still stalemate rather than progress through compromise, and I could use a nap. I rode around the top...

Friday, November 6, 2015. Recycling Beeswax Candles, Part 4. Process involves a water heating device called Sansaire. It's a recirculating water heater made for sous-vide. Cooking. You can look it up if you're not familiar with the process. You will have to weight down your partially-filled vase unless it is glued to the bottom of the bucket, or you find some other way to offset its buoyancy. That's why I have a chunk of marble on top. Once it is full it's going to stay still. My improve-the-process plan...

Saturday, January 31, 2015. For the Birds, Part I (My wild kingdom). Editor's note: I wrote this series of 5 posts 3 years ago and I have reposted it here on my blog). We live in the city, but our backyard is a jungle. It is very welcoming to birds, and we have lots of visitors. From hummingbirds on the small side, to owls and hawks on the large end. I'don't often photograph owls, but the hawks are very prominent in the garden. And often fighting with crows. For the Birds, Part II (my wild kingdom).

Cruising from San Diego to Seattle. Monday, December 21, 2015. Maridel By The Book. I thought readers might appreciate a look at the original documentation that Gary dug up for MARIDEL, his 1959 Stephens Brothers yacht. I scanned these images, Gary framed them, and they appear on the walls of its cabins today. Here we go . BTW depending on your device, you can click on any image for an enlarged version. This is the end of this short blog. Making of a New Maridel. The engines weren't running - in fact, mo...

Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Goodbye Princess, Hello Yokohama. Dark Gray. Rain. Wind. Another lovely day onboard the Diamond "Typhoon" Princess. Our cruise is almost over. It hasn't been the best trip so far, but no harm has been done to our bodies (hopefully) or our budgets. We can try another cruise, another time. We're starting to pack. We must put our suitcases out before 9pm and won't see them until tomorrow on the dock. Finally, the Inside Scoop. They monitor 22,000 data points ( temps, pressures, ...
