Sword Gates and Earthquake Plates. Detailed iron ornamentation wrought by hand or cast has graced the city since the 1730 s in the form of gates, grilles, shutter guards and foot scrapes. Decorative lights and trees radiate from grand rooms in historic homes, sidewalk trees are tastefully lit downtown, and the old tradition of a Christmas tree shining from the middle of Colonial Lake is always a favorite. Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Charleston is incredibly vibrant in December, with a host of bright flowers and turning leaves. Some Camellias and Azaleas are in bloom, as are Cassia trees. Gingko Biloba trees are radiant with yellow leaves, and Japanese Maples are bright red. Interestingly, none of these species are indigenous, all having been brought by botanists in the 18th century to Charleston, where they thrived in the sub-tropical climate.
