future economics: June 2007
http://futureeconomies.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, 28 June 2007. The wrong sort of oil. Iran has just imposed petrol rationing,. The oil-producers realise that shortages in the market will simply increase the price they get - why waste billions building refineries that will never recoup their costs? Keep supply tight and the price will rise. The demand for petrol is very inelastic like most 'distress' purchases, consumers will find the extra - even if it cuts other spending in the wider economy. Expect rationing in the UK within 3 to 5 years.

future economics: March 2007
http://futureeconomies.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, 29 March 2007. Storm clouds ahead for drivers? Petrol prices are starting to creep up again after their temporary fall back after a quiet hurricane season in the US. Most UK garages are now selling at or over the 90p/litre mark. UK drivers face a lot of challenges over the next few years with congestion charging, national road pricing, no new road building (now surely a thing of the past? And an inexorable rise in petrol prices followed by rationing within 5 to 10 years. But only the BNP. It's ...

future economics: madness
http://futureeconomies.blogspot.com/2007/05/madness.html
Wednesday, 16 May 2007. Unfortunately we had to drive to Hampshire on business today. Part of the route is along the A34 and we were amazed by the number of car transporters we passed. What on earth are we thinking of? There is no reason at all for these to block our roads, waste oil and add to climate change. These could all have been carried on ONE train as they were obviously heading towards Southampton, probably for export. And they were all 4x4s! And what idiots are buying them? House Price Crash UK.

future economics: April 2007
http://futureeconomies.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 24 April 2007. These horrific scenes were on the A37 in Pensford a few days ago. They outline very clearly why our roads are such a dsiaster area. Ironically not 200 metres to the right there is an abandoned section of railway, moronically closed in 1968 due to flood damage, even though the road suffered just as much if not more. And could even the most idiotic car-fan argue that the above scenes are acceptable? But what has this got to do with economics I hear you ask? The solution is to create...

european byways: April 2007
http://europeanbyways.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, 12 April 2007. Still in rainy Austria . As a bit of a remedy to the Thorlerbahn video, this is a video of the Mixnitz-St Erhard. Line, which is still with us! Thorlerbahn - a recently closed Austrain NG line. Unusually this Austrian narrow gauge. Line closed as recently as 1999, and has now been lifted. From the video it looks like it took a typically scenic route. Excuse the translation - the original website is in French. You may find the original easier to understand! There is now a society.

european byways: a lost southern line
http://europeanbyways.blogspot.com/2007/05/lost-devon-line.html
Tuesday, 15 May 2007. A lost southern line. There are few really rural lines left in Britain, this was Watergate Halt on the old Torrington to Halwill. Line, which retained a freight service into the 1980s. This shot was taken in 1980. The line had closed to passengers as late as 1965, it was also one of the last standard gauge lines to open in Britain. The line is now unfortunately lifted throughout, although the northern section of the route from Bideford to Barnstaple. OUR BLOG FAMILY .

european byways: swanage pier tramway
http://europeanbyways.blogspot.com/2007/05/swanage-pier-tramway.html
Friday, 11 May 2007. An unusual sight in Swanage is the remains of the old Swanage Pier Tramway, closed for many decades. The rail on a good portion of the route survives, set into the blocks along the sea front. These views were taken on May 9, 2007. It wouldn't take a great deal of work to restore this route for short trips along the sea front - perhaps even in a horse tram! 19 July 2007 at 20:28. Sunday, 20 May 2007. 1958 - an English branch line. A lovely atmospheric film of the Saxmundham to Aldeburgh railway in 1958, including street shots. Tuesday, 15 May 2007. A lost southern line. There are few really rural lines left in Britain, this was Watergate Halt on the old Torrington to Halwill. Is likely to reopen in the not too distant future. Friday, 11 May 2007. Saturday, 5 May 2007. This little visited line. Is on the Isle of Man and is a real delight. Trains start from a small station set in the woods and end up on the cliff edge close to an abandoned zoo.
