Hamm Beach is located at Ferrybridge and is the beach on the eastern side of the causeway linking Portland to Weymouth and faces into Portland Harbour. It is composed of underlying shingle with low sandunes on top. The northern end has been split by the building of the new bridge and channel south of the original channel and this has left an isolated remnant between the two channels. The Fleet connects to Portland Harbour at Ferrybridge. Originally this was a ferry boat across the entrance but this was replaced by a wooden bridge in 1839. 18 miles and 180 billion pebbles. Chesil Beach is 18 miles (28 kilometres) long and, on average, 160 metres wide and rises to 12 metres in height. It is a pebble and shingle tombolo. Connecting Portland to Abbotsbury and then continuing north-westwards to West Bay near Bridport. It is the largest tombolo in the UK. Are graded in size from fist-sized near Portland to pea-sized at Bridport. The pebbles are mainly a mix of flint and chert, with some quartzite pebbles from Buddleigh Salterton.
