My Chickens

Saturday, April 23, 2011. April is almost over and Easter is here. Wow! Time sure does fly. And the chicks grew quickly. First they get wing feathers. Then they get little tail feathers. Then the shoulder feathers start coming in and the wings fill in in-between. They were really filling up the box. Look at the tail on that little chick. These birds are so interesting because they are each completely different from the other in color and the way they feathers are marked. They really are the cutest things!

My Chickens: March 2011

http://chickensinmyyard.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Today, March 29th, 2011 at 7:30am we got the call from the Post Office. I went at 8:00 to go downtown and get the chicks. They were all there and nice and healthy. 11 Silver-laced Wyandottes and 11 Golden-laced Wyandottes. Last years White Plymouth Rock were all yellow so I was amazed to see black and grey with splashes of gold and bronze. Very very tiny. You forget just how tiny they are. Free wins every time. My easel works really well for holding the heat lamp.

My Chickens: September 2010

http://chickensinmyyard.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 8, 2010. 5 Months and Loving It. It's only been 5 months but it feels like I've had chickens forever. Sometimes I get asked if I'm liking my chickens. My answer is: I'm loving them. I went out and took pictures today. Up close and personal. She is an interesting bird. The little Buckeye pullet. She gets picked on a bit but not too bad. I tend to watch over her somewhat. She lays me an egg almost everyday. This is a picture of the inside where the nesting boxes are. Roosters don't tak...

My Chickens: March 2010

http://chickensinmyyard.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. This basically explains why. Her farm is not far from here. Are getting longer. I put a couple of old boards in the nest for them and they love to show off on it. This little chick is doing leg stretches. Yesterday I bought 5 little Buckeye chicks. They are two days older than the White Plymouth Rock that I have. So altogether now I have 30 chicks. They are all doing great. Every once in a while I have to clean off a pasted butt, but I think that is normal. Some of the chicks a...

My Chickens: January 2011

http://chickensinmyyard.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 5, 2011. That was 16 roosters. We didn't process any pullets this year. We felt that 16 roosters was plenty of food for our tiny family. Winter has been challenging to say the least. November we had 7 casualties. Down to 15 pullet's and an average of 10 - 11 eggs a day I was feeling pretty good. I was able to share several dozen eggs a week. Seemed like the birds were getting along alright, though they wouldn't stay on our property. January was cold. I was concerned, moral was low&...

Saturday, April 24, 2010. Food, Inc., how it all began. Http:/ milledrive.com/videos/29660/Food Inc. 2009 Documentary.html. Saturday, April 17, 2010. Today we will build a chicken coop. It will probably take the whole weekend, seeing that Mark has to work this morning, Saturday. I'm looking forward to the actual work beginning on it. Saturday, April 17th, the actual work began. Back view of the little window. I thought you would only eat the white ones? Chloe helped me move the chickens. We were both...

Some of you who are my friends on facebook or who read my other blog, will know about this already, but I can't put it off any longer. Here are our choices for 4th grade, 2nd grade, kindergarten, and preschool (3 year old). As always, these are just the choices that work for us, for any variety of reasons. If you are curious about a specific curriculum, let me know and I will try to answer questions! Most of these choices are not new for our family). Mental I...

Chickens in our Garden. Just another WordPress.com site. About Chickens in our Garden. Surprisingly cool yet hot and spicy veg drink. July 8, 2014. Franks red hot sauce. I’ve been experimenting with spicing up tomato / veg juice drinks and come up with a great combination I thought I’d share with you. I used V8 veg juice in the end but ordinary tomato juice is fine. V8 vegetable juice (cold, straight from the fridge). Malden Sea Salt (ground in a pestle and mortar). Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce.

Wednesday, August 22, 2007. Stranger in a Strange Land. We have a couple of new teachers at our school. One who’s name is Mr. Gonzales (not really his name, but I assure you his name is equally stereotypically Hispanic). Picture Mr. Gonzales, will you? Medium height, dark hair, olive skin, dark eyes, sexy Latino accent. NO! Lord, help us. As an aside, this particular teacher seems to be quite successful at winning the respect he deserves from his students - so kudos to him! Sunday, August 19, 2007. I am ...
