'The Little Wooden Horse': June 2014
http://thelittlewoodenhorse.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
The Little Wooden Horse'. Wednesday, 25 June 2014. So, a very brilliant thing is Resonance FM's new monthly radio show; 'Down the Rabbit Hole'. Yesterday's programme was all about the (just awarded) Greenaway prize and featured illustrators Nadia Shireen, Ed Vere, Jon Klassen and (small drumroll obviously) Shirley Hughes having a natter. Should you unaccountably have MISSED this treat you can catch up here. I recommend. Except it should be longer and on more often. Read It's perhaps 100 words long but Fe...

'The Little Wooden Horse': grown up book diversions
http://thelittlewoodenhorse.blogspot.com/2014/04/grown-up-book-diversions.html
The Little Wooden Horse'. Sunday, 27 April 2014. Grown up book diversions. I am, like all the best heroes of children's literature, an orphan. It's not quite the same thing. I'm 42 years old and everyone should. Be an orphan eventually, unless the natural order of things has gone horribly wrong somewhere. Still, most people get their parents around for longer perhaps. My mother died at a not-ripe-at-all age and when I was 12. That is sad and unfair and not right. But it is also a simple fact that...This ...

Blue Book Balloon: July 2015
http://bluebookballoon.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
I like talking about books, reading books, buying books, dusting books. er, just being with books. Map of Blue Book Balloon. Review: Blood Salt Water by Denise Mina. Orion, 30 July 2015. I'm grateful to the publisher for letting me have an advance copy of this book through Netgalley. You get old, you get scared. But keeps the story humming along. It's a tightly wound, compulsive book interweaving Morrow's investigation with the spiralling events in Helensburgh. We can see it all going wrong, but not ...

Blue Book Balloon: December 2014
http://bluebookballoon.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
I like talking about books, reading books, buying books, dusting books. er, just being with books. Map of Blue Book Balloon. My son's LEGO collection grew last week, demanding extra space for display. One set in particular - a glorious '20s style cinema. It's an edition of AE Housman's. Which may seem a gloomy note on which to end 2014, but I do find New Year's Eve a gloomy (if somewhat sentimental) time. Best wishes to anyone reading this for 2015 (if it is 2015 for you)! I find You Know Where is useful...

Blue Book Balloon: Review: Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
http://bluebookballoon.blogspot.com/2015/07/review-seveneves-by-neal-stephenson.html
I like talking about books, reading books, buying books, dusting books. er, just being with books. Map of Blue Book Balloon. Review: Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Borough Press: London, 2015). 861 pages, Hardback. I bought this book from Wallingford Bookshop. The first thing to say about this book - and it's the first thing you will notice - is that it's long. Massive. An 861 page whopper. If you find that daunting, it's understandable, but let me try and persuade you to try it! 31 July 2015 at 09:58.

Notes from the Toybox: September 2013
http://notesfromthetoybox.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Notes from the Toybox. Monday, September 23, 2013. Legoland fairies and the seventh layer of hell. The Legoland Fairy. Not sure why she's got a ripped dress but et la! We decided to descend on Legoland yesterday - forgetting lots of key things about the place like the fact that you really need to arrive within a smidge of it opening to avoid the traffic, the queues to get in, and the queues for the rides (basically if you ever want to go - and go on everything - don't go at weekends or at half term!

Blue Book Balloon: March 2015
http://bluebookballoon.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
I like talking about books, reading books, buying books, dusting books. er, just being with books. Map of Blue Book Balloon. Review: The Death House by Sarah Pinborough. I bought this book from Goldsboro Books in London. The survivors wait their turn for the trolley in the night. It's a difficult read in place, the implacable logic of the story driving forward when you would rather it halted, giving a respite, a delay, but always involving, compassionate and true. Daniel may not be destined to grow up, b...

I like talking about books, reading books, buying books, dusting books. er, just being with books. Map of Blue Book Balloon. Review: Silma Hill by Iain Maloney. Freight Books, 29 June 2015. If you pressed me to sum this book up in a few words, I'd say "modern gothic". Or perhaps, to make it absolutely clear, modern Gothick. There is an air about it of one of those tales where monstrous, freak events abound, people are buffeted and baffled and heroes tested. Review: The Seed Collectors by Scarlett Thomas.
