Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Jumbotron in Smallville II. As promised, the following is an edited and updated version of my original post from 2011. Oh how some things change, while others stay the same. When I moved near the corner in 2000, the intersection contained a quaint little plaza on the northeast corner with a family-owned bakery, some untamed (and rather nice) trees on the southeast corner, and a sheep farm on the southwest corner. On top of the visual discrepancy, the Jumbotron is very distractin...

How can we learn more about global diversity at home? The goal of the project is to get the world excited about the World's fair again. While they are very popular in Europe, North America seems to have forgotten that they still exist. I created this brand in the hopes that Toronto would win the bid for the Expo in 2025, which they are currently in the running to achieve. The catalyst the main poster. The poster printed at 18 x 24". The image is also a link to the Expo website, which is fully responsive.

How can we raise awareness of the importance of Inuit arts and culture? Printed poster win interactive digital overlays. York University's Center for Mobilizing Inuit Cultural Heritage approached me to design an interactive map for "Design Latitudes," an exposition at the University of Alberta. The map shows major hotspots for Inuit culture and art across Canada, and how they relate and connect to each other. Each image is linked to a digital piece which can be viewed by pointing a smartphone at it.

How can we interpret the forms of value that we place on inanimate objects? A print and digital catalog of favourite objects. The goal of the catalog is to interpret the reasons behind why people place high value on items that may seem useless or ugly or worthless to others. This project also features the use of D3.JS. A Javascript library specializing in interactive data visualizations. Some of the infographics make use of translucency with layers of vellum to compare more at once. The viewer can move t...

How can we use storytelling to connect with people we have never met? You can learn more about the app on its dedicated website. The image below will link you to the website. The app's unique selling proposition comes from the way that each story is recorded in the voice of the person who experienced that story. That way the story becomes extremely personal through tone of voice, flow, and selective pauses. Check out the working prototype below. If you're viewing this from a mobile phone, click here.

How can we ease the pain of losing a loved one? An interactive data visualization. This project consists of an interactive digital infographic, made with Processing. At the beginning of this project, I had a goal in mind of making generative art through the outcomes produced in an interactive data visualization. I looked through a multitude of sources for open datasets, and settled eventually on Statistics Canada’s dataset on causes of death in Canada. When a specific province is selected. Chloe is curre...

Chloe Silver Design: Jumbotron in Smallville
http://www.blog.chloesilver.ca/2011/03/jumbotron-in-smalltown.html
Friday, March 4, 2011. I have lived in a semi-quiet suburban neighbourhood in Richmond Hill for just over eleven years now, and I can say with some level of confidence that there have been some major changes since I moved in. I am speaking specifically of the slow but sure commercialization of all four corners of the nearest major intersection to where I live, Rutherford Road and Bathurst Street. According to the Transit Toronto. What could be more ignominious than being abandoned? As we all know, it obv...

Friday, August 28, 2015. Do you remember what you had for breakfast this morning? How about last Tuesday? Or maybe this day last year? Remembering little details can be difficult, and many of the details we do remember are unimportant and can clutter up your brain. But there are small exchanges and happenings that occur in my daily life that can be the difference between a good day and a bad one, and I tend to forget about things like that after a while. Dear Field Notes,. Since I already planned my days...

Friday, September 19, 2014. I've had a smartphone for almost two years now, and I've used emojis on a regular basis for about three months. I was just never really that into them. I like the good old fashioned :) and if I am feeling really saucy, there's always room to spill over into C: and the like. We've got a whole 26-character alphabet of options! But of course, I did eventually give in to the magic that is the world of emoji. There are just so many options! Must be common, then. And I loved the ide...

Thursday, September 5, 2013. As you may or may not know, there are a few things in life that I [irrationally] cannot stand to be around. They're ridiculous things, I'll admit, such as having my picture taken without my knowledge, bowls that are square-shaped, and people who say things like "I want to tell you something, but it's a secret.". Chloe Silver Design: Weekly Update: Wedding Ephemera
http://www.blog.chloesilver.ca/2015/08/music-chromeo-for-my-last-venture-into.html
Sunday, August 9, 2015. Weekly Update: Wedding Ephemera. I think the guitarist David was thinking the same because he mentioned his surprise at how many people came out to see them. Quite a bit has happened this week! First, I got my G2! Onto the highway I go. Other than that, I managed to ride my bike up and down a very challenging hill (scared out of my mind) and play some tennis. I also scored a ticket for Kaytranada in September and Disclosure in October! On top of all that, I can only assume that if...

Thursday, July 31, 2014. Since the day I first discovered that there was music in the world beyond Top 40's radio, I have been in pereptual search of music that speaks to me on an emotional level. I enjoy a good beat and a catchy melody as much as the next person, but the music that really resonates with me must display a high amount of emotion. Wikipedia defines Trap music as follows:. Trap music incorporates an extensive use of multi-layered hard-lined and melodic. Crisp, grimy and rhythmic snares, dee...

Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Credibility In The Strangest Places. Everybody has their guilty pleasures. Some people are addicted to reality television, some people can eat their weight in ice cream if you don't wrestle the spoon out of their hands. Mine is only slightly less horrible than that; it's memes. Yes, I can admit that I am addicted to memes. Just in case you've ben living under a rock and have no idea what I'm rambling on about, Urban Dictionary defines. That pesky meme as:. I find the above defi...

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Weekly Update: Self Assembly. Sam Smith's face is complete. I was also able to take the bike out for a spin (finally found my helmet, too). How cute is he? Kind of a weird hairline though.but those cheeks! I'll be finishing my wee Sam this week, probably on Wednesday. This is definitely a week for goals because I am also taking my G2 test tomorrow! I also want to ride my bike and maybe play some tennis on Sunday. I was playing Cards Against Humanity. Weekly Update: Homer Hudson.

Tuesday, August 19, 2014. We all know street art/graffiti is not a new concept. It remains an underlying strain on many urban centres around the world, with people always debating on whether it is a real form of art or vandalism of public/private property. Personally, I think that most forms of street art are positive influences on their surroundings, often turning ugliness into beauty and expressiveness. To see more about this phenomenon in Montreal, check out this link. In particular. It's a little...

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. A little dustier than usual, and with an unusual 0% functionality of my vocal cords, I arrived home from Oro Medonte's first Bonnaroo-style festival yesterday. And now begins my very special Wayhome-themed version of this weekly update. Check out my little video snippet below:. As I predicted, no Wolf Parade work this week. But I did get in another driving lesson yesterday (pretty much right after I got home from Wayhome, dusty and all). I also.went to Wayhome! A plywood statue of...

Wednesday, 19 May 2010. Today was day of the Little Theatre Cinema. Showing. We had all decided to meet up for a meal as a 'goodbye to the first year'. When arriving in the theatre, sweets in hand, we all sat down to an introduction by Mike, this is the point where I started to feel apprehensive about all these people seeing my work. Would they see the mistakes i made? Would they think its rubbish? Does my voice sound terrible on the voice over? END OF THE FIRST YEAR! Today we came back to Paintworks.
