原名「水燦林」。以前的水林地區地處濱海，沼澤地多，水漆樹長滿各地，故名「水漆林」。後來因為「漆」的音同「賊」所以後來改稱「水燦林」，最後稱為水林。據傳聞明末遺臣東渡來台，已有多數原住民居住於此。至1683年清治時期，由福建漳、泉兩地較多之移民來此開墾，而成一聚落。 1723年，水林鄉隸屬於諸羅縣(今嘉義縣)，到了1888年，新增設雲林縣後本鄉隨即劃歸管轄。至1895年日治實施廢縣置廳行政改革，水林鄉先隸斗六廳旋又改屬嘉義廳。1920年地方自治實施又改編入台南州北港郡所屬，同時將「水燦林」改為「水林庄」，設立庄役場。 1945年水林鄉隸屬台南縣，轄區為二十四村。1950年行政區域重新劃分，將台南縣劃為台南、嘉義及雲林縣，水林鄉再改隸於 雲林縣. 65292;定稱為「雲林縣水林鄉」迄今。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).

相峙，西面為台灣海峽。東西寬14.5公里，南北長11.6公里，土地面積7711.89公頃，全境略成貓犬狀，地勢平坦。 四湖鄉是一個典型的沿海農村聚落，其地理環境特性與變遷不但影響歷年四湖鄉民生活方式，也是四湖鄉歷年發展的實際見證。因為位於海邊，地形環境變化是本鄉特色之ㄧ，例如港口三條崙地區，在日治時期日均在此地建有碉堡、砲台、灌溉溝渠、營旗等設施，最後在地理環境的變化下，沉入海底，只有在退潮時仍隱約可見。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
