You walk in from either direction and descend deeper and deeper into lists of names. The wall is so reflective that you see yourself and the environment superimposed over the names. We took the Metro in from our hotel in Silver Spring and got off at the Smithsonian stop. This takes you right up to the National Mall, directly in between the Congress building and the Washington Monument. It kind of takes your breath away. There's the Washington Monument! After all, isn't this where Jimmy Stewart goes straight to in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? It's definitely a place he returns to. The Memorial is crowded, of course, but also peaceful.
