Chris & Steve’s Shop. Chris and Steve's Weblog – City Chickens. The diary of two novice gardeners and chicken keepers. Laquo; Damson Merryweather. Pear and Lemon Jam. Oct 28th, 2011 by Chris. I have completed harvesting the pears from the garden this morning. This tree had no fruit at all last year but this season has been great with lovely blossom in the spring and loads of fruit. I understand that these pears keep well but I shall be having a look at how I can use them in cooking as there are so many.

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: It's a mucky business

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2008/03/its-mucky-business.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Tuesday, March 11, 2008. It's a mucky business. I visited my compost bins for the first time this season today, and to my horror realised the one I'm filling is miles from the top, and I've already used up all the rotted stuff from last year. My third one is empty altogether, and growing a healthy crop of nettles through the bottom. Wood shavings are fine in principle, but I find that when they're applied as a mulch they're far too acid - I've lost the crops through ste...

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: Taking cover

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2008/03/taking-cover.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Thursday, March 13, 2008. When the weather's at its worst - and let's face it, it has been for the last week or so - this is where I retreat to. It's my greenhouse, technically speaking not on the allotment but in my back garden. I did experiment with raising seeds in my allotment greenhouse, but I couldn't reliably get up there often enough and lost a lot when the weather turned warm. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Veg and fruit varieties. Its a mucky business.

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: May 2007

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Thursday, May 17, 2007. Strawbs on the way. At last I got around to weeding the strawberries today: they were sprouting thistles by the time I got to them, so they've been a bit neglected, but fortunately I've shoved so much manure and compost into the beds that the soil is about the best on the allotment and the weeds just jumped out. Tuesday, May 15, 2007. Planting, planting, planting. This time of year I abandon everything else in the rush to get my baby plants into ...

Comfort food for dreamers. If It’s Me by Nicholas Evans. October 29, 2010 by citychickens. If I be the first of us to die. Let grief not blacken long your sky. Be bold yet modest in your grieving,. There is a change but not a leaving. For just as death is part of life. The dead live on forever in the living. For all the gathered riches of our journey,. The moments shared, the mysteries explored,. The steady layer of intimacy stored,. The things that made us laugh or weep or sing,. Nor are they stone,.

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: Knowing your onions

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2008/03/knowing-your-onions.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Tuesday, March 04, 2008. Don't tell anyone, but I'm not all that good at growing onions. Not yet, anyway. I love them, and we eat loads of them, so I keep trying and I'm getting better at it every year - but the results always seem to be disappointing. So, on to this year. I'm steering away from the posh flat onion types and gone back to bog-standard, with a variety called Setton. It's actually closely related to Sturon, so has the same uniformly round bulbs, bu...

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: Harvesting this month - March

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2008/03/harvesting-this-month-march.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Friday, March 28, 2008. Harvesting this month - March. Swiss chard is something most people think of as a summer vegetable - but if you make a late sowing, in around late July or August, you can overwinter it and the result is a really tasty filler for the hungry gap. Easy to grow vegetables. Id like to read more of your veg postings - added it to my list of blogs to follow, before I realised there had not been a posting since the Spring of 2008. I live in hope.

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: November 2007

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Thursday, November 29, 2007. The waters are rising. About this time of year, things get distinctly soggy up at the allotment. This is typical: the last trench of the bed I'm double-digging at the moment, about a spade's depth and dry when I left it, but a day later the water table is high enough to fill it from underneath. Wednesday, November 21, 2007. Just goes to show - you really do need sturdy netting cages, not just a bit flung over at the last minute (my other row...

The Constant Gardener's Allotment: October 2007

http://lottiemania.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

The Constant Gardener's Allotment. Wednesday, October 31, 2007. Led to the inevitable lengthy wishlist of seeds and plants - my favourite kind of shopping! I've ordered all mine from Thompson and Morgan. This year - a departure from my usual habit of getting everything from The Organic Gardening Catalogue. But then I thought I'd try someone different. And besides, all the mainstream suppliers are now offering organically-produced seed so Garden Organic have some competition at last. This year I've branch...
