Friday, February 28, 2014. I was trying to come up with a title for this post, but every time I typed something related to freezing eggs, I just knew that most people that search for "freezing eggs" would be looking for something quite different! So just in case there's any confusion, this post is about chicken eggs. The first thing to do is to separate the eggs. These small containers are the perfect size. To thaw the eggs, I put them in the refrigerator over night (when I actually thought ahead! I let ...

Monday, January 27, 2014. Old Man Winter.Time to Go! Winter.go away. It's been fun, but I'm seriously over the "polar vortex", unrelenting winds and snow. My chickens are over you too. On the days they decide to actually lay eggs, they freeze before I can even get to them. Well, until winter listens to me, we have to make some temporary housing arrangements for the poultry. With snow drifts like this, I can't even get into the run without shoveling around the gate. Links to this post. Zesty Baby Back Ribs.

Friday, October 31, 2014. Pumpkin Chocolate Swirl Muffins. I was flipping through recipes last night trying to find a decent unprocessed recipe for pumpkin muffins. I couldn't really find anything that sounded all that great, so I decided to take a regular recipe and alter it to fit my needs. I had no idea these muffins would turn out as good as they were! I didn't take pictures along the way, so you'll have to settle for looking at these gorgeous muffins in their finished state. 1 c sorghum syrup. Four ...

From Mess Hall to Bistro: New Spring Chicks
http://messhalltobistro.blogspot.com/2015/04/new-spring-chicks.html
Thursday, April 9, 2015. Things sure have been busy in our house lately! We started out with 42 eggs. After candling on day 7, we were down to 36. On day 18, we had 35. On day 21, they started hatching. Hatching continued all the way thru day 24. This was our first time incubating chicks, so I was just a little obsessed with watching them! Friday, April 10, 2015. Our chicks are nearly three weeks old now and they are growing so fast! They started out so very tiny. These guys are less than 4 days old. Here they are about a week into life. We ended up with a couple chicks with scissor beak. One of them is fairly pronounced, the other is relatively minor. Here's Skizzers. Amazingly, she eats and drinks just fine, even though her beak is crossed. And we have one who's legs didn't develop quite right. Or is it a a lifelong disability? A few yea...

Monday, February 23, 2015. I've been craving some broccoli cheddar soup for a couple of weeks. Serious cravings here. I picked up some Campbell's Broccoli Cheese soup, but that didn't hit the spot. As it turns out, I don't like Campbell's soup very much at all. So anyway, we woke up Saturday morning to a fresh coating of snow, and I knew that was the perfect day for this soup! 2 heads of broccoli, steamed. 1 quart chicken stock. 1 pint half and half. 1/2 cup butter (one stick). 1/2 c whole wheat flour.

Monday, November 17, 2014. Make Ahead Breakfast Bowls. After our October Unprocessed adventure, I haven't really gone back to cereal as a breakfast staple. I've been sticking to whole wheat muffins, and quite honestly, I was getting bored. I needed something different-and something with substance. Enter the breakfast bowl! And the best part about these-you can make them ahead of time! It does take some time to prepare, but it's well worth it early the next morning! Then top with a bit of cheese. Start ou...
