Friday, January 29, 2010. An Analysis of Wifi Coverage, Hairstyles, Poverty and Globalization. I’m having trouble being so connected. Trouble might not be the right word. I feel like I’ve never travelled and been so in touch with my family and friends at home. Why does this trip feel easier, maybe, less distant from home than the others? This raises several questions for me. The first being, how will I ever learn French if the World Wide Web in English is at my fingertips? Or just the uniformity of urban...

Danville to Dakar: June 2010
http://danvilletodakar.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Thursday, June 3, 2010. I've got to wrap this up, but it's hard. Hard because I haven't really "finished" with Dakar or Senegal or Africa, hard because I don't know how I can improve upon the blogged goodbyes that have come before me. I'll quote one post and link to the other, because I think these two say it as well as I could ever hope to. This is Mairéad O'Grady's final post, "You say goodbye, I say hello.". As for my own "goodbye"? I didn&#...

Danville to Dakar: March 2010
http://danvilletodakar.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Thursday, March 25, 2010. Here, home, and happiness. In all honesty, I'm a little nervous about my mother's upcoming visit. It will be her first time in Africa, just as it has been for me. What will she think of this place? Of all those things that first struck me- the air pollution, the trash, the lack of street lamps at night- what will surprise her the most? And after seeing it all, will she try to take me back home on the plane with her?

A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Thursday, January 28, 2010. I'm under a lot of umbrellas here in Senegal- that of Yale, Mt. Holyoke, The Institute de Francais pour Etudiants Etrangeres, and Universite Cheikh Anta Diop- but the most important among these is the WARC, the West African Research Center, here in the Fann Residence of Dakar. And wireless internet and clean bathrooms. In short, a very soothing place. And now, some pictures. The big sign over the main entrance. The t...

Danville to Dakar: April 2010
http://danvilletodakar.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Monday, April 26, 2010. And this is Viviane Ndour, Youssou Ndour's sister, another pop star. This is her version of "Champion." Like most of the popular songs that I know here in Senegal, it's been playing on the radio for months. Probably since I got here. Yep. Some days / senegalese super-etoiles. For lack of a "cure," here's something fun: Senegalese music videos. This is the video of his hit "Salagne Salagne.". How wonderful my host family ...

Danville to Dakar: February 2010
http://danvilletodakar.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Sunset at La Phare- check. Inside the car rapide, which had pink lacy curtains and a heart-shaped pillow. That said "I Love You" hanging from the rear-view mirror. The lighthouse is situated on the hill/cliff in the background here. We spread out our panne-style skirts and tanned. Restaurant at the top, where we had bouye juice and fataaya poisson. Saturday, February 13, 2010. And the Radisson Blu (above, in the phot...

Danville to Dakar: December 2009

A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Thursday, December 31, 2009. What (not) to wear in Dakar. I'm packing. Here's a picture:. This is a difficult process. Trips to the pharmacy aside- to pick up obscene amounts of pads, tampons, and malaria medication- I still have to journey back and forth to my closet, trying to guess what is acceptable dress in Dakar. Here's what I know so far:. And I can't wear shorts or tank-tops. Students at the university dress up for class. Outfits get mu...

Danville to Dakar: making memories
http://danvilletodakar.blogspot.com/2010/05/making-memories.html
A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Saturday, May 8, 2010. There's something poetic about having only a few days left to distill Dakar in my mind and memories. However, I also have final projects, which interfere with my last-minute impressionism. S, the waist beads that women here wear to be sexually irresistible to their men. The sun sank as we talked and piled up the shells. Law in West Africa, and procrastinating by writing this blog post. May 10, 2010 at 3:55 PM. I've realiz...
