Sunday, May 18, 2008. Great Wall and Security. Our last full day in Beijing began with a group meeting to discuss what issues are shaping technology in China. The scholars participated in a brain storming session to identify themes surrounding these issues. Then the group was subdivided to perform a deeper dive into each theme. Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Add On: Balloon Trip. Unfortunately, we had some trouble with one of the balloons. A tear developed in one balloon (pictured). It had to make a quick landing. The rough landing caused one scholar injure his foot. A few x-rays later, the scholar was able to return to the hotel. Saturday, May 31, 2008. Back in the U S of A. Yesterday the delegation made its way to the airport. A number of scholars choose to take the Maglev (magnetic levitation train) to the airport. The train speeds to over 430 km/hr (over 267 mph) on its 7 minute 30 second journey. It is the first commercial high-speed maglev line in the world. It went into operation in 2004. Tuesday, May 20, 2008. In the afternoon, the scholars took part in a basketball game against some of the better local players. The game was closely contested. But the Chinese team ended up winning 31 to 29. The Chinese students lacked our height, but they made up for it with tenacity. Perhaps there is another lesson to learn here. Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Add On: To Yangshou. The day after getting to Guilin, we were already on our way to another destination: Yangshou. This very small town is down the river from Guilin. We boarded a boat for the four hour ride down the Li River. Towering cliffs surround the river on all sides during the trip. International Scholar Laureate - Technology China: Final Full Day

Sunday, May 25, 2008. That evening the delegation met for the final closing dinner. We ate in the Oriental Pearl Tower. Like most of the buildings in Shanghai this is a recent addition, completed in just 1995. It is the third tallest tower in the world. The restaurant revolves slowly giving you a constantly changing view of the magnificent Shanghai skyline. It was a fitting end to a fantastic trip. Posted by Faculty Advisor.
