Cross Cultural Communications: March 2010
http://colleencrosscultures.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Colleen from Colorado and Colgate communicates with companions about her cross-cultural encounters. Friday, March 26, 2010. When talking about Senegal's Independence day, of which the 50 year mark will be celebrated on April 4th, my friends never gave personal answers about what this day means to them. Instead they talked about how their country really isn't Independent because it relies on France and other countries still for aid in this Neocolonial age. And when we talked about at what age a Se...My Fr...
Cross Cultural Communications: Things that never happened in Senegal
http://colleencrosscultures.blogspot.com/2010/05/things-that-never-happened-in-senegal.html
Colleen from Colorado and Colgate communicates with companions about her cross-cultural encounters. Saturday, May 15, 2010. Things that never happened in Senegal. I never saw precipitation falling from the sky. Not once did it rain, hail, snow, spit. When they say the rainy season is from June to October, they mean it. It doesn't rain one single bit outside of those months! I never wore shorts outside of going to the beach and playing soccer. I've gotten really used to wearing skirts and linen pants.
Cross Cultural Communications: August 2010

Colleen from Colorado and Colgate communicates with companions about her cross-cultural encounters. Sunday, August 1, 2010. Africa running into me. Robert isn't the only Senegalese connection I've made since I've been home. Last weekend I was camping in the mountains with some friends and I met another Senegalese guy at Walmart! To which he responded: "yes, from Senegal." This thrust us into a quick conversation in Wolof, to his utter astonishment. I left Walmart smiling and pictured him back at ...So ev...
Cross Cultural Communications: Another face to face encounter

Colleen from Colorado and Colgate communicates with companions about her cross-cultural encounters. Monday, May 3, 2010. Another face to face encounter. Oh, nothing but the skull of the sheep we consumed about a month ago for Easter dinner. Apparently the head has been hanging out in our freezer, waiting for the day my host mother decided to knock it's teeth out before cooking it in a peanut and palm oil sauce. Cross Cultural Communications: January 2010

Colleen from Colorado and Colgate communicates with companions about her cross-cultural encounters. Thursday, January 28, 2010. Towards a multipolar world? In the talk he developed the argument that our world is in the process of becoming multipolar so that at present it is neither unipolar nor multipolar but somewhere in between. Being the practically minded person that I am, what does this really mean? And being an Africanophile, what are the implications of such a proposition for Africa? Now, you woul...

L'Expérience Sénégalaise: February 2010
http://claire-in-senegal.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
The Senegalese experience experiment. 26 February, 2010. So I went for a weekend with my Wells buddies to Joal-Fadiouth, which is where the first president of Senegal [Leopold Sedar Senghor] was born and raised. I could talk more about it, but Colleen created a beautiful, intelligent and succinct post all about what we did last Saturday and Sunday. You can see it here. I would like to point out that one of the most excruciating parts of the trip was the sept-places. And it was special. I felt like I ...
senəgal: January 2010

Friday, January 29, 2010. An Analysis of Wifi Coverage, Hairstyles, Poverty and Globalization. I’m having trouble being so connected. Trouble might not be the right word. I feel like I’ve never travelled and been so in touch with my family and friends at home. Why does this trip feel easier, maybe, less distant from home than the others? This raises several questions for me. The first being, how will I ever learn French if the World Wide Web in English is at my fingertips? Or just the uniformity of urban...

L'Expérience Sénégalaise: first impressions
http://claire-in-senegal.blogspot.com/2010/01/first-impressions.html
The Senegalese experience experiment. 09 January, 2010. There are five steps. To culture shock: vacation, depression, denial, anger, and escape. They say that the vacation stage lasts a few weeks before you're plunged into depression, but I'm not so sure- looking at Dakar was pretty depressing in many ways. Strangely, though, the depressing stuff was juxtaposed with the beautiful stuff. For example, the beach covered in trash and dead fish juxtaposed against the purity of the ocean beyond. On an unrelate...

L'Expérience Sénégalaise: December 2009
http://claire-in-senegal.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
The Senegalese experience experiment. 18 December, 2009. Q So, wait, Africa, what? For the whole semester? A Yes, this is indeed a traditional study abroad, as I'll be there for a whole semester. I'll be in Dakar, Senegal for a little more than five months (from January 8th to May 15th), studying with Wells College at the University of Dakar. I'll be taking some as-yet-unknown classes with the university (so far, I'm definitely taking African Theatre, Wolof 101. And Advanced French Grammar. Well, I hope ...

L'Expérience Sénégalaise: May 2010
http://claire-in-senegal.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
The Senegalese experience experiment. 22 May, 2010. Misconceptions: senegal vs. "africa". This issue has been brewing in my mind for several months now. People tend to group all the countries in Africa into one lump- the idea of Africa. The land of lions, AIDS, and starving children surrounded by flies [see this humorous article. 18 May, 2010. Another problem I foresee is that no one I know will have gone through an even remotely similar experience; no one I know is even interested in going to any part o...
Danville to Dakar: FIN (for now)
http://danvilletodakar.blogspot.com/2010/06/fin-for-now.html
A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Thursday, June 3, 2010. I've got to wrap this up, but it's hard. Hard because I haven't really "finished" with Dakar or Senegal or Africa, hard because I don't know how I can improve upon the blogged goodbyes that have come before me. I'll quote one post and link to the other, because I think these two say it as well as I could ever hope to. This is Mairéad O'Grady's final post, "You say goodbye, I say hello.". As for my own "goodbye"? I didn&#...

A study abroad blog: Spring Semester 2010 in Dakar, Sénégal. Thursday, March 25, 2010. Here, home, and happiness. In all honesty, I'm a little nervous about my mother's upcoming visit. It will be her first time in Africa, just as it has been for me. What will she think of this place? Of all those things that first struck me- the air pollution, the trash, the lack of street lamps at night- what will surprise her the most? And after seeing it all, will she try to take me back home on the plane with her?

http://claire-in-senegal.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
The Senegalese experience experiment. 24 June, 2010. I'm sure you can understand why that one's different.) Although I may never write these blog posts- though I'd like to- I'm sure I'll always have the basis for them in my head, floating around. The object of this post is to give you some memories of mine, some souvenirs. Of Senegal. that didn't quite fit in anywhere else, but which I cherished all the same. I've changed quite a bit since I first landed in Dakar. This was my life in Senegal, and remnant...

http://claire-in-senegal.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
The Senegalese experience experiment. 31 March, 2010. Well, last weekend I went out to the desert to ride camels and ride the sand dunes. My camera lens subsequently got sand in it, and so I don't have pictures of the event. However, I will upload them once I clear out my camera with compressed air, inch allah. So, in the meantime, use your imaaaagination! Throughout the post are pictures I borrowed from a friend whose camera worked. Thanks, Alex! 2,000 too much? How much will you pay? We dashed to a nea...

Cross Cultural Communications
Colleen from Colorado and Colgate communicates with companions about her cross-cultural encounters. Tuesday, June 26, 2012. This past weekend I got together with two girls who studied in Senegal with me and one of the Senegal program directors, Waly, who came from Dakar for a week-long conference outside of Boston. We ate at Boston's gourmet Senegalese restaurant Teranga. Monday, November 7, 2011. Sunday, August 1, 2010. Africa running into me. I was paying for a box of Milk Dudds when I noticed two scar...
