Galley Head Birding: November 2014

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Well, the autumn fizzled out without really ever getting started hereabouts! Haven't really been out and apart from a well-timed whooper swan. From the jax, and a goldeneye. On the lake, there's been nothing in the way of year tick action either ( 126. So it was with great excitement and anticipation that I found myself on the shores of Lough Gill, County Kerry yesterday for a spot of dirty twitching. And the target? Ireland's 4th ever american coot. The male lesser scaup.

Galley Head Birding: October 2014

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Blimey - a month since I've been on here! Apart from a rather bird-packed few days on Shetland, I've seen very little. Not that I haven't been out slogging round Galley most days, its just there's been very little to see. Thus far into October I've managed siskin. For the year at Galley. A bit pants. Until today. With the wind finally in the south-east, I was quietly optimistic that there'd be a bit more around today. And so it proved, with a fine yellow-browed warbler.

Galley Head Birding: hammer time

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/hammer-time.html

Monday, April 20, 2015. The first few years of stomping round Galley revealed that yellowhammers. Were mucho scarce in these parts, with only one or two sightings a year. In recent times, birds have been hanging around in winter, and, during the last year of the bird atlas, one male was even singing for most of the summer. In the last two years, there have been two to three pairs breeding, and hopefully numbers will increase again this season. Here's a nice male I got quite close to this morning.

Galley Head Birding: ears and hammers

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/ears-and-hammers.html

Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Not been an awful lot of variety going through Galley of late. Did stumble across a few wheatears the other morning - the first photo opportunity I've had this spring. A few were bathing in the recently refreshed puddles down the top lane. Couldn't resist another go at the showy male yellowhammer. Labels: big lens barry. Blurred and on the huh. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Buzzard and Continental Cormorant, Tralee. The magic Autumn four. And a couple more.

Galley Head Birding: February 2014

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 27, 2014. Finally got a digiscoping adaptor for my SLR and scope so had a couple of rushed attempts at getting a "great capture" - looks like there's a lot to learn altho I'm quite pleased with the horses! Prepare for a dodgyscoping master class! Best of a bad bunch. Otter from the Magic Patio. Horse of the Day. Iceland gull on the lake. Labels: Blurred and on the huh. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. And lashing it was! Swimming into the bay. A bit of repositioning and the views were...

Galley Head Birding: The Patch

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/p/the-patch.html

Hidden away down in County Cork in south-west Ireland, Galley Head is a grand spot altogether! I’ve been working Galley since 2003, and the area that I cover is just about 2km2 in area. It’s a coastal headland, with a mixture of dairy and arable farmland that is thankfully not particularly intensively farmed, with gardens and a bit of woodland. Galley Head is probably most famous for seawatching between July and October, with some very large numbers of goodies like Great. And Cory’s Shearwaters. In fact,...

Galley Head Birding: August 2014

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 29, 2014. Back for more after the school run this am, but very little doing in comparison to last night. Managed to glean half a dozen each of cory's shearwaters. With 8 sooty shearwaters. Too But nothing else really doing. Headed back up again this evening, as I'd convinced myself that the wind hadn't swung round to the west and was glad I did as a fine balearic shearwater. Flew by nice and close. Very welcome for the year list ( 109. Labels: another day another shearwater. By the end of ...

Galley Head Birding: doves

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/doves.html

Saturday, April 18, 2015. Gave Galley a good going over this am, but with a pretty stiff easterly blowing, it was pretty hard work! Managed to dig out three year ticks though, with house martin. And a fine brace of collared doves. Scarce here) for my efforts ( 83. As well as these kwality prizes, a few chiffchaffs,. And a blackcap were knocking about Shite Lane, while a wheatear. Was on the top lane. Labels: dove from above. Man with a stick. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The magic Autumn four.
