Understanding Optionals in Swift
http://commandshift.co.uk/blog/2014/06/11/understanding-optionals-in-swift
IOS development and other nonsense. Understanding Optionals in Swift. Jun 11, 2014. What are they for? In Objective-C, you can safely send a message to. Which will return something treated as. This variety is part of the reason Swift has optionals, of which more later). This is a useful and powerful feature, but it only applies to Objective-C objects. There’s no universal way to deal with absent or no-value types such as integers, floats or Booleans. Things like. How do they work? If there is no value, t...
Things I learnt about the Photos framework
http://commandshift.co.uk/blog/2015/07/14/things-i-learnt-about-the-photos-framework
IOS development and other nonsense. Things I learnt about the Photos framework. Jul 14, 2015. I recently worked on an app featuring a photo browser. The work involved updating the code (previously using Assets Library) to use the Photos framework. I found out a few things that don’t seem to be represented very well in the documentation or the examples floating round online, so here they are. Image request completion blocks. What’s important to note is that the first completion block can be executed.
Parenting and Programming
http://commandshift.co.uk/blog/2014/09/01/parenting-and-programming
IOS development and other nonsense. Sep 1, 2014. My second daughter was born this week. In a change to your usual programming, here’s a little whimsical reflection on the parallels between being a parent (though my experience of the former only goes up to 4 years) and being a programmer. Mostly because it’s hard to write code-based blogs with a sleeping baby on your lap. You didn’t write it. There’s a lot of legacy code and uncommented workarounds in there. Nervousness at release time. You can have the b...
Swift Generics
http://commandshift.co.uk/blog/2015/05/11/swift-generics
IOS development and other nonsense. May 11, 2015. Don’t Repeat Yourself is a solid bit of programming wisdom. It’s so common it has been made into an acronym, DRY, which means that people get to make jokes about DRYing out their codebase. If you write a bit of code that does something, and elsewhere in your program you need to do the same or a very similar thing, don’t copy and paste the bit of code. Make it accessible from both places, and make the minimum set of changes needed to make it reusable.
Stop nesting animation blocks
http://commandshift.co.uk/blog/2014/04/01/stop-nesting-animation-blocks
IOS development and other nonsense. Stop nesting animation blocks. Apr 1, 2014. Chaining animations together has always been a little bit awkward. You’d do the first step, then in the completion block, do the second step, then in. Completion block, do the third step, and so on, until you close it all off with a staircase of doom:. You don’t need to do this. New in iOS7, there is a method for building stacks of animations:. AnimateKeyFramesWithDuration: delay: options: animations: completion:. Most of the...

One page website design gallery One Page Love. If you were choosing the default bookmarks for a browser, what would you choose? These are Apple’s choices for Safari nowadays. 1 Apple – of course. Ndash; makes sense. One destination for pretty much every kind of basic internet service. (Google’s homepage is too sparse.). 3 and 4. Google Maps and YouTube – Interesting choices, but maybe it makes sense if you consider their presence on the iPhone? Not sure about these. The basics you’d expect.
