Platte Valley Farmer: August 2013
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 17, 2013. Another one of the many regulations that affect farmers these days is the SPCC or Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure. While it went into effect several years ago most farmers were ignoring this regulation because the EPA was looking at other industries and not ag. Not anymore. We decided to build a steel tank with a poly liner to contain our fuel storage tanks. It was easier to install than we thought it would be, the worst was figuring out what went where. I am the fo...

Platte Valley Farmer: July 2013
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 7, 2013. Sounds and sights of farming. This week I was reminded again of why I love to be a farmer in Nebraska. We started irrigation season and the first week is a lesson is patience and remaining calm. While I want to get every well running the first day, there seems to always be problems here or there that delay the process. I love the morning sets the best. It is cool and the wildlife is still out and about. Everyday I get to see. I love being a farmer. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Confes...

Platte Valley Farmer: June 2014
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 1, 2014. Happy Anniversary to Us! For those of you who follow Barb or I on Facebook, you'll know that our anniversary was . let us say interesting. For the rest of you I'll share some of the details. It was the middle finger of my right hand. Barb went running for a WetOne to catch the blood. I looked at Ray and asked where the nearest Urgent Care was as I knew it was going to need stitches. So Happy Anniversary to Us! Wife cuts my finger and I get stitches. But actually this is a pretty...

Platte Valley Farmer: England 2014
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2014/02/england-2014.html
Sunday, February 23, 2014. We are in Jolly Old England for a week on holiday. We are having a wonderful time. Below are some of my first impressions and memories. The British are even more confused about the metric system than we are. They buy their beer in pints, but their petrol in litres. They measure small things in centimeters, but roads in yards and miles. I don't know about weights, but lorries are weighed in tons, but how much is a ton? A biscuit is a cookie. You put mayo on your fries or you...

Platte Valley Farmer: June 2013
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 16, 2013. This week the corn is really starting to take off. We are cultivating the first time to loosen the soil and kill any weeds that escaped the herbicide. Next step is sidedressing the corn. No we are not putting clothes on them. Sidedressing means adding fertilizer to the growing crop, right beside the plant. This is a shot of the coulter that runs along the side of the corn. It runs about 2-3 inches deep . Behind the coulter is an injection nozzle to squirt the fertilizer int...Looki...

Platte Valley Farmer: Heathrow People Watching
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2014/03/heathrow-people-watching.html
Monday, March 3, 2014. If you want to people watch, you need to fly out of an international hub, like London Heathrow. I had the opportunity to have a 6-hour layover at Heathrow this week. After rechecking my luggage, my first flight was separate from the rest of trip, I crashed for awhile outside security on a convenient bench at a food outlet that was not busy at 7 am. What a shock. And then there are the people, thousands of people, it seems. Every nationality, every skin color, all waiting on the...

Platte Valley Farmer: February 2014
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 24, 2014. We took the train out of London to Leicester, pronounced Lester, in the East Midlands. We got brave and hired a car. Barb was brave enough to drive while I navigated. We left the car park hoping we could bring the car back in one piece. The main purpose of the visit to the East Midlands was to check out my family's roots. My great grandfather immigrated from Hartshorne, Derbyshire, UK in April 1873 and homesteaded just south of where Barb and I live today. We went to a historic...

Platte Valley Farmer: April 2013
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 22, 2013. As far as I know there have always beens chickens on our farm. I grew up feeding the chickens, gathering eggs and helping to pluck the broilers when they were ready. After getting married I discovered Barb also grew up doing the same thing. When we swapped houses with my parents to move onto the home place she inherited my mother's chickens. This is our freshly cleaned layer house. With the cold wet weather I helped scoop and haul the chicken litter out to the garden. We u...Our 1...

Platte Valley Farmer: September 2013
http://plattevalleyfarmer.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 15, 2013. One of the benefits of farming many small fields bordered by creeks, canals and ditches is the wild fruit that we get to enjoy. In central Nebraska there are 4 varieties of wild fruit that we may get to harvest, emphasis on the MAY. The next fruit that ripens are chokecherries. They are small purple to black berries that will really make you pucker when eaten raw. Cooked, however, with enough sugar and they are wonderful. They make great jelly and even better pies&...The final...
