Rural Revolution: Progress on projects
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/08/progress-on-projects.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Friday, August 7, 2015. While I was in Portland a couple weeks ago, Don was incredibly busy. Not only do we still have large outstanding orders for tankards. But there are endless projects we want to accomplish before the snow flies. In other words, time's a-wastin'. Gotta get some stuff done. We've had a freaky weird summer, much hotter and drier than normal, and all the crops are accelerated. Farmers were cutting hay in June rather...
Rural Revolution: Heeeeere's Lucy!
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/02/heeeeeres-lucy.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Sunday, February 8, 2015. Many of you remember last summer when we had a sweet little red heifer calf born. Because we couldn't think of a name for her, all of you lovely readers chimed in with dozens of suggestions. We finally chose "Lucy" since, of course, she's a red-head. Lucy is now seven months old and darling. True to the nature of calves, she's become quite an escape artist. Look at that belly! Posted by Patrice Lewis. February 8...
Rural Revolution: Building feed boxes
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2014/10/building-feed-boxes.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Ever since Don built the awning. On our barn last year, he's had another project in mind: to build feed boxes for the livestock. Before we had the barn built. We fed the cattle in makeshift feed bins that didn't work well. Dominant animals pushed lower animals out of the way; and hay was wasted like crazy as the animals pulled it out of the boxes and onto the ground where it was trampled and soiled. It was a s...
Rural Revolution: Hoarding
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2010/08/hoarding.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, August 18, 2010. I have a pet peeve. I hate the word “hoarding.”. Let me be more specific: I hate the term “hoarding” as applied toward Preppers. Hoarding implies that by buying some extra bottles of shampoo, we are doing so at the expense of others. It implies that we are somehow wrong. That by ramping up our own food storage, we are causing others to go hungry. To prepare for future shortages. Most just choose. I clearly rem...

Rural Revolution: A calf for Raven
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/04/ravens-baby.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Thursday, April 16, 2015. A calf for Raven. I've been watching Raven carefully for her impending birth. Yesterday morning she tried to make a dash for it - jumping over the fence into the woods - which isn't unusual for a cow who really. Wants to be alone to birth her baby. So we closed her into the barn, to her great annoyance. She frequently laid down and rested for a few moments between contractions. Within seconds, Raven was on her f...
Rural Revolution: Another new calf
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/05/another-new-calf.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Sunday, May 24, 2015. Friday was a hot, humid, thundery afternoon, but the storm clouds dodged around us (which is unfortunate, as we could use the rain). Don and I decided to take a walk. On our way out, we noticed a calf chasing a raven in the field. A few other animals got in on the chase as well. Since the calf was born the farthest possible distance away from the house (of course), we were faced with the task of bringing mama and ba...
Rural Revolution: The queen is dead; long live the queen!
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/07/the-queen-is-dead-long-live-queen.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Thursday, July 9, 2015. The queen is dead; long live the queen! Here's some beekeeping updates:. With the unseasonably hot weather we've been having, the bees often congregate (or "beard") outside the hive on hot evenings. Apparently this in no way indicates swarming is imminent; it's just to cool down. One of our hives is thriving enormously (the one on the right). So much so that it was time to put on supers. Crud The queen is dead.
Rural Revolution: Bees please
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/08/bees-please.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Saturday, August 1, 2015. In the wake of our dead queen bee. A few weeks ago, you may have wondered about the status of the new queen. The day after picking her up, I inserted the queen (in her cage) into the weak hive; then a few days later replaced the cork plug with a mini-marshmallow; then a day after that, confirmed the queen had been released. So far so good. Mike didn't seem fazed, however. He opened up the strong hive. One of the...
