https://coxmathblog.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/personal-responsibility-vs-learning
Trying to make it matter. It Was Fun While It Lasted. Personal Responsibility vs. Learning? January 23, 2010. Are You Kidding Me? Apparently, they were effective, though. The countenance of the class went from chin-on-hand-it’s-Friday-I’m-tired-here-we-are-now-entertain-us to thank-you-sir-may-we-try-another-cuz-this-is-some-cool-stuff-and-I’m-gettin’-it. Its tough to reproduce lessons like that so I exported the notes to .pdf and emailed them to the absent students. 8220;Thanks for the notes! I have alw...

Trying to make it matter. Why I Love Twitter: Reason #247. January 18, 2010. The move to middle school has really allowed me to consider not only why we do what we do, but why students do what they do. I had one such opportunity the other day during my introduction to quadratics. Filling out the table took all of 30 seconds because my students are very good at following directions. 8220;4 what = 12? The answer’s 8. Obvious. And they got this answer as if it were a thoughtless reflex. As long as column 1 ...

Trying to make it matter. Why I Love Twitter: Reason #247. January 12, 2010. 11:47am: I ask @rjallain. If he has an effective way to demonstrate to students how the horizontal velocity of a projectile is not affected by gravity. 12:00pm: He sends me this link. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Trying to make it matter. I’m Jumping In. The Easter Egg Hunt. April 8, 2009. I made up a practice test. Covering the standards that would be assessed, uploaded it to voicethread. I think I really like this activity. Students not only have to work out each problem themselves, but they have to view another’s work critically. I would love to hear what you think. Little Classroom on the Prairie. Saturday, April 25, 2009. It started innocently. A student sighed saying she couldn't wait for graduation. I asked what she planned to do next year. The conversation quickly turned to what you're allowed do to on probation. You can go to school and do your basics. You cannot join the National Guard. Huh. Not information I was equipped with. And then I learned more. He had everything going for him," they say. But everything here isn't always enough. View my complete profile.

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Friday, January 30, 2009. Checking the Annual Report Off My To-Do List. I really like Dan Meyer's annual report contest. Even though I treat it more as a meme.) Despite it being a change in the calendar, January never feels like the change of year to me. My life calendar always seems to shift in the summer months. So pausing mid-year to reflect on the changes reveals interesting behavior patterns to myself. So for now, here you go. A few final reflections. I like not havi...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Monday, May 25, 2009. Since starting the class two years earlier, I'd had plenty of opportunities to wonder: What is the value of a positive experience if it is only temporary? How do you weight the advantages against the disadvantages of affection, or of aspiration? Page 323, True Notebooks. Friday, May 22, 2009. Prayer from the Last Day of School. I picked up my copy during third period. There is now a photo on Bebo of me reading it to two of my Blueberry Girls. And hap...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Is out of jail. Younger sister has graduated. She loved her first year of college. The guy from the video. Was back on leave from the army. His younger brother’s hair is long again. His son is a toddler now. The silent student transferred from the college where I visited her to one closer to home. She wanted to be able to visit for a couple of years, anticipating a greater distance when she goes to grad school. One of my blueberry girls. The teache...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Thursday, June 18, 2009. The new teachers are here. Interviewing right now. (My students are waiting for reports on what they're like.) They're asking for advice, wanting to know what I've picked up out here. The best I'll offer, build your support network. And then expand it. Ain't that the way it goes? One minute you're trying to remember the name of that site. I immediately started building the connections. Joining conversations in the comments of my favorite blogs...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Wednesday, December 17, 2008. We were informed yesterday that today's first and second periods would be mentor groups. This is the third time we've met this year and we were free to come up with our own plans. I'm the cutesy-crafty type, so I figured we could make Christmas cards, write Christmas letters to reflect on the year, or cut out snowflakes. It reminded me of Dan's snowflake math. Last year (and Jason's redux. Sunday, December 14, 2008. Lockdown, assembly.) M...

Questions?
Trying to make it matter. Wednesday, April 12, 2017. Sometimes It's an Accident. We are learning about angles in grade 7. Yesterday, I asked students to draw 10 different angles (at least 3 acute and at least 3 obtuse) and measure them with a protractor. Historically, I've been really bad at teaching students how to use a protractor, but they made their best pass at it. Ok, so what do we do? But that isn't even the good part. That wasn't the good part either. We created a list of numbers. Quick check of ...
