Cream Tea Birding: Garden Bumbles
http://creamteabirding.blogspot.com/2015/07/garden-bumbles.html
Birds and other wildlife at home in the UK and Overseas. Plus the odd pudding or cake! Monday, 27 July 2015. For something a little bit different and in light of bees being in the headlines again regarding the use of neonicotinoids or "neonics", Helen and I spent the weekend trying to identify the different species of Bumblebee present in our garden. I knew very little about Bumblebees and still do, but am learning! Common Carder Bumblebee (left) Male White-tailed Bumblebee (right). 1 August 2015 at 12:26.

Now half way through a trip to Shetland volunteering for the RSPB. As part of Helen's Sabbatical. We are based on Fetlar. And are carrying out various bird surveys on Fetlar, Yell and Unst for Species and Habitats Officer Malcie Smith and his assistant, Andy Simpkin. More surveys still to do, but shall keep looking. Here are a few highlights from the trip so far.
Cream Tea Birding: Pallid Harriers
http://creamteabirding.blogspot.com/2015/05/pallid-harriers.html
Birds and other wildlife at home in the UK and Overseas. Plus the odd pudding or cake! Wednesday, 13 May 2015. Pallid Harriers have always fascinated me, ever since I saw my first on the Isle of Sheppey in August 2002! I have also acquired a fair few photos over the years, so thought I would put them to some good use! This grainy photo from the archives, shows my very first Pallid Harrier in Kent, August 2002. Same bird as above. Adult or near adult male Pallid Harrier, Finland, May 2014. 2CY Male Pallid...

Teign Birds: East vs West
http://teignbirds.blogspot.com/2015/07/east-vs-west.html
Wednesday, 15 July 2015. A brute of a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull. That was on the Salty yesterday evening and again this morning is the best the east end of the estuary has had to offer of late along with an adult Mediterranean Gull. On Tuesday and up to eight Sandwich Tern. A quick look off Passage House on this evening's high tide drew a blank with regard the Gull-billed Tern (it was still present until 14.30 at least) but a single Black-tailed Godwit. And four Common Sandpiper. The Two Bird Theory.

Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": Whitethroat (with bits of a Lesser)
http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2015/06/whitethroat-with-bits-of-lesser.html
Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Whitethroat (with bits of a Lesser). Is giving a passable impression of a Lesser Whitethroat amongst its usual song. This bird was found originally in 2014 by Roger Hicks in a similar area but wasn't really pinned down until last week when he relocated it. It joins a select group of species I've heard give copies of similar species songs - Firecrests that sounds like Goldecrests, and Willow Warblers that sound like Chiffchaffs - both of which I have now come across several times.
Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": February 2014
http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, 23 February 2014. I eventually managed a trip up to Norfolk to see the Parrot Crossbills at Holt CP yesterday. After seeing them very briefly first thing in the morning we eventually got brilliant views around lunchtime. Not excellent photos but I was too busy actually looking at them. Choop choop! Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": March 2014
http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 9 March 2014. Thanks to Neil Wright, I finally got to hear the remaining Siberian Chiffchaff sing yesterday morning. And it sounds more or less like it should for a tristis. Take a listen:. But there is no doubt this wasn't a 'classic' bird, at least in my eyes. When it first arrived it looked good (see above) but you would have walked straight past it if you were only 'listening' for Siberian Chiffchaffs. Take a listen here:. Posted by Steve Blain. Steve Blain presents "Bird Porn": December 2013
http://steveblain.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, 21 December 2013. Strange looking beasts, aren't they! They have been at Blunham Lake for a couple of years now but can often be hard to pick out of the Wigeon flock. I think they could be hybrid Wigeon x Gadwall. Any other opinions on their identification welcome. Posted by Steve Blain. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Teign Birds: August 2015
http://teignbirds.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Monday, 31 August 2015. This morning began with a short seawatch from Teignmouth from 06:45-08:00 which yielded a Balearic Shearwater. All heading north. Next I tried my luck at Newton Abbot Racecourse where a vocal Green Sandpiper. Was seen in flight briefly before dropping into a ditch. Moving on to Flow Point, a fresh juvenile Little Stint. Was roosting with the Dunlin. Flock; other waders included 12 Ringed Plovers. And 3 Common Sandpipers. Of the autumn there showed well and even sang a few phrases.

Cream Tea at Chatsworth
My name is Rhiannon and I am currently studying for a degree in English Literature at the University of Birmingham. Ideally when I leave the safe place that is university I will, by some miracle, manage to persuade my way into a job in journalism. Fingers crossed. I like crumpets and my cat; I dislike tomato ketchup. This is just a page of things I like.
