Thursday, June 3, 2010. Andy Martinez Trip Report. In September, 2009 I arrived in Buyat with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement but without a wide-angle lens more than 35 mm. There were plenty of macro subjects for me, but a wide-angle lens captures the beauty and power of this area best. I was occupied with abundant opportunity to photograph, but I was longing for a real wide-angle lens. But now I’m back in Buyat and well equiped. Lucky me! Swimming along the pristine coral reefs.

Before lunch i used my wide angle lens around the pristine corals and after lunch i changed to macro lens for hunting the critters. The night dives proved to be the best i have ever experienced. My special interest in pygmy seahorses was rewarded when we found Hippocampus bargibanti in an yellow version and a Hippocampus Denise in an orange version. Three hours south of Lembeh Island by speedboat, lies the hottest new dive destination in North Sulawesi, Buyat Bay. Protection from destructive fishing practices started with Newmont Mining Corporation which operated a gold mine in the nearby mountains from 1996 until 2004. Critters@Buyat is currently the only dive operator in the region. Started in 2008 by Critters@Lembeh. Founder Danny Charlton, we have now developed over 30 dive sites in the region since our initial surveys.
