The Crooked Needle: September 2011

http://crookedneedle.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Putting needles in a heavy check-in bag is never a good idea. Friday, September 9, 2011. Sooo It's been a long time since I've last done any form of blogging or recording or something. (Blame Facebook, it's so easy to post things straight there! First of all, WOOLFEST. You know, alpaca is the poor man's cashmere), spinning and dyeing demonstrations and oh so much else that I simply have to go and see it for myself. Another great festival of yarn that is probably better known: The Knit and Stitch Show.

http://crookedneedle.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Putting needles in a heavy check-in bag is never a good idea. Wednesday, July 30, 2008. The Secret Crochet Project. I have been away from this blog for too long. Started with the intention of sharing my own designs (because I get bored very often) I think it'd be a good place to update my adoring public (*cricket noises*) about my knitting endeavours. I think that can now be extended to include crochet, so that should be: CRAFTY endeavours. (: Now, on to the Secret Crochet Project. Yes, definitely. A...

Dressed up Dreams: Hanbok Project Part 1

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2011/09/hanbok-project-part-1.html

Saturday, September 3, 2011. Hanbok Project Part 1. After making a cotton hanbok with Folkwear's pattern. I wanted to try doing something more elaborate with traditional Korean fabrics. The first step was to search for cloth suppliers online- which sounded simple enough at first, until I realized that most of the websites were written in Korean. (Papabear has posted some useful looking links here. Here are some of my favourites from trawling the internet:. LOVE the crazy wig! White satin, for the waist b...

Dressed up Dreams: More on the Hezi (Undergarment)

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2012/12/more-on-hezi-undergarment.html

Friday, December 14, 2012. More on the Hezi (Undergarment). It's interesting that while European undergarments became increasingly structured as they evolved (think of all the boning and underskirt cages), undergarments in ancient China made use of organic shapes and soft materials like silk and other thin fabrics. In all its various forms, these undergarments looked rather similar to our modern day camisoles and essentially consisted of a piece of soft fabric with straps or ties. Since there isn't much ...

Dressed up Dreams: November 2012

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 22, 2012. An extremely long post on) Tang Costume History. I shall attempt to get the background research out of the way as soon as possible so that the hunt for fabric can begin :). Fashion of course evolved in response to these different views about women, where style became more liberal and challenged the norms. While many variations abound, these are the key garments worn by ladies during the period:. The second picture shows the silhouette of the Ruqun in the Tang dynasty; apparen...

Dressed up Dreams: December 2011

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 16, 2011. Green with envy thinking about how many skilled seamstresses Susan Hilferty had to help make this dress! And of course, how she managed to dream up this beauty in the first place. Her talent is astounding.). Also found some behind-the-scenes videos about the costume making process:. Check out her wonderfully inspiring sketches here. And also a useful article on costume design grad school here. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Hello, and thanks for dropping by! Dressed up Dreams: Another drawing

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2015/06/another-drawing.html

Sunday, June 21, 2015. It's been ages since the last post and work has been terribly busy, to the point where I contemplated just giving up and settling for a more realistic career instead of pursuing my passion. But there is always the knowledge that giving up will be an eternal regret. So I'll be trying to apply for another costuming undergraduate course next year, let's see where that goes! In the meantime, another Tang dynasty costume design :). Labels: ancient chinese hairstyles. I love this design!

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Hanbok Project Part IV: Dongjeong and Finished Jeogori. Japanese website selling dongjeong and hanbok does it the same way as bias tape, attaching it to the collar with a slipstitch. On a side note I wish I discovered this website earlier.it sells a large variety of ornaments and some very very beautifully embroidered hanboks. Prices are quite steep though, (seriously, SGD543 for a hairpin? And if I'm not mistaken they only deliver within Japan. Now it can stand! After stif...

Dressed up Dreams: Making the Hezi

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2012/12/making-hezi.html

Sunday, December 30, 2012. So these are the pattern pieces from Butterick's #6766 for an evening dress. The pattern was pretty old and it was tough figuirng out the instructions from the faded pattern markings. All pieces need to be cut out twice, one time with the inverse side of the pattern placed on the right side of the fabric. Unfortunately, because it is stored in this curved position over a long time, the plastic won't lie flat and cannot be directly sewn into clothing. Using the curved boning woul...

Dressed up Dreams: October 2012

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 13, 2012. So, a very long time ago I decided to redo my hanbok skirt as I still wasn't very satisfied with the end result. I ordered the cloth and the accessories and then.work life got in the way. Last week, I finally had a bit of a breather so I decided to finish up the chima so that I can wear it to a a year-end party. In the end, I found this. Another problem for me was pressing the strips once they were turned the right side out. It was hard controlling the cloth to get the edg...

Dressed up Dreams: August 2012

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 9, 2012. So I'm starting work on the hanbok again, after a long hiatus from sewing. I've made the norigae; fused an Oriental looking pendant from polymer clay artist Linda Mosley. With Sonjjang hanbok's plain gray-blue one. Painted ring clasps an antique brown/gold to give it a more archaic finish. A preview of the finished outfit, with the cloth lying flat on the floor. The green isn't exact in this pic; it's closer to the colour of the skirt in the above photo. I shall attempt to get t...

Dressed up Dreams: April 2012

http://dressed-up-dreams.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 6, 2012. Yes I know it has been ages since I last posted, and unfortunately it has also been ages since I last touched my sewing machine. The last I checked, a clump of mould had colonized my tailor's chalk, a fitting image for the state of the projects which I have left off. Another option is this gorgeous damask cotton (Aviary 2 Damask Granite). It stands out more and the colours are amazing, but I'm a bit concerned about using 100% cotton as it crumples easily and can look a bit cheap.

The Crooked Needle

Putting needles in a heavy check-in bag is never a good idea. Tuesday, July 5, 2016. After seeing "Finding Dory", I really, really wanted a beluga whale. As much as I thought Bailey was a bit silly, I liked him a lot! So of course, I had to crochet one. Clip of Bailey and Destiny from "Finding Dory" (C) Disney. A brief look on the Internets told me that there was NARY A FREE PATTERN IN SIGHT. Clearly, we need ourselves some beluga whale! So fat. so pleasing. White DK yarn of your choice. Sunday, January 22, 2012. Poppy in her Fisherdog sweater January 19, 2012. The photos are just for fun, and are not what I'm writing about today. Maverick in his lumberjack fleece. So I asked what right brain actually means and she said the right brain is the creative side; that I'm a creative thinker. We observed how our society rewards linear thinking, and she commented that in my attempts at perfection, I have continued to embrace that idea and attempt to be a linear thinker.
