9,000 Miles from Kansas: The Here and Now
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2012/05/here-and-now.html
Tuesday, May 8, 2012. The Here and Now. When transition is coming, sometimes it's hard to focus on the here and now. Or at least that's how it is for me. Our departure date for our one-year home assignment is looming on the horizon. It's just 45 days away to be exact. So right now, I often find myself living in the future. I sat down to think about what I love about the present, living and working in Tanzania. A few random things came to mind. Friends from Around the World. Warm Weather and Sunshine.

Thursday, April 7, 2011. The Daily Obstacle Course. Lately, my daily drives to and from town to take Anna to school seem like a bit of an obstacle course. Well, because of these, mostly. I will never complain about Missouri roads again. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). We're two Midwestern-born American missionaries ministering in East Africa through Bible translation and language development. We hope this blog will keep you updated on some of the comings and goings of our family. View my complete profile.

9,000 Miles from Kansas: Our New Normal: Type 1 Diabetes
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2013/03/our-new-normal-type-1-diabetes.html
Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Our New Normal: Type 1 Diabetes. Your son has Type 1 Diabetes.". Those are words we never expected to hear spoken about our son. Our joyful, energetic, usually healthy boy? He's never even missed a day of school. Two weeks ago, we took Josiah to the doctor after noticing somewhat sudden changes in a few of his normal habits. He seemed to be going to the bathroom a lot. He explained what Type 1 diabetes was. From the doctor's office, Josiah was admitted to Children's Mercy Hospital...

9,000 Miles from Kansas: October 2011

Monday, October 17, 2011. Making 'Cents' of American Money. Now that furlough is months away instead of years away, I decided it was probably time to start (re)introducing the kids to American money. Josiah and Anna are both beginning to figure out counting with Tanzanian shillings, but pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters and dollars are quite foreign to them. So, after finding this great money game idea at No Time for Flashcards. First we picked out some plastic food and made our price list. The next year...

9,000 Miles from Kansas: Recipe Fail
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2011/12/recipe-fail.html
Wednesday, December 7, 2011. You'll never know unless you try. That is my cooking motto here. Even though I can find many of the ingredients that I need for the food I want to cook, I make a lot of things from scratch and I end up making substitutions often. The internet is a great help for substitutions. And I've found a lot of good ones. It happened to me this week. I had high hopes for my bowl full of strained yogurt as I whipped up the cheesecake batter and poured it into my springform pan. The t...

9,000 Miles from Kansas: August 2011
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 7, 2011. On Friday, Josiah turned 7, and we celebrated with a Super Mario Brothers birthday party. Happy Birthday, sweet Josiah! We love you so much! Last Monday, Josiah and Anna started back to school after 5 weeks of "summer" holiday. However, since it's technically cool season in Tanzania at the moment, I should probably call it "winter" holiday. Having a few weeks of unstructured life was nice, though. Here's a brief recap of our "summer" activities. Anna had a blast playing in the san...

9,000 Miles from Kansas: Jumping for Joy
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2012/05/jumping-for-joy.html
Tuesday, May 22, 2012. There's something about a trampoline. You can't help but feel a surge of joy as you launch yourself into the air and fall back again to the springy, black surface beneath and then do it all again. It has proved to be a good choice. Our kids have spent many hours jumping together, giggling and screeching with joy. Margaret didn't think that the trampoline would hold an adult. She found out it could! Like I said, there's something about a trampoline. It makes you feel like a kid again.

9,000 Miles from Kansas: Mince Pies
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2011/12/mince-pies.html
Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Today, two American girls got together to make an English holiday staple - mince pies. Rachel's husband, Jonathan, is British and really loves them, so we wanted to have these on hand for our Christmas dinner in a few weeks. We rolled and pressed and filled and topped. We egg-washed (it's a technical term). Then we baked. It was a little tricky getting them out of the muffin tins when they were done, but most of them came out successfully. Not too bad for two American girls.

9,000 Miles from Kansas: July 2015
http://theheffts.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Back in May, I was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, getting ready to fly up to a town called Mwanza. I would then take a four-hour bus ride on to another town called Musoma. We have a large translation project going on in Musoma serving eight language communities, with plans to expand even more. I began to explain our work of language development and Bible translation. And this man, John*, was very taken in by what I described. I felt the Holy Spirit prompting me to jump in and dig a...
