유교의 경전(經典) 중 3경(三經)의 하나인 《 역경(易經). 단순히 《역(易)》이라고도 한다. 이 책은 점복(占卜)을 위한 원전(原典)과도 같은 것이며, 동시에 어떻게 하면 조금이라도 흉운(凶運)을 물리치고 길운(吉運)을 잡느냐 하는 처세상의 지혜이며 나아가서는 우주론적 철학이기도 하다. 주역(周易)이란 글자 그대로 주(周)나라의 역(易)이란 말이며 주역이 나오기 전에도 하(夏)나라 때의 연산역(連山易), 상(商)나라의 귀장역(歸藏易)이라는 역서가 있었다고 한다. 역이란 말은 변역(變易), 즉 '바뀐다' '변한다'는 뜻이며 천지만물이 끊임없이 변화하는 자연현상의 원리를 설명하고 풀이한 것이다.
