Wednesday, October 5, 2011. The same college counselor moved to another school this year in Shanghai, and she started a book club there too. I snagged this list of their books to share. March: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. April: The Paris Wife; A Novel by Paula McLain. Cold Snap: Bulg...

Friday, May 4, 2012. Love in the Time of Cholera. I was given this book by a professor in college. He gave our entire class copies of it because we read a review of it by Thomas Pynchon (the course was Nabokov and Pynchon), which was, of course, incredibly poetic. Read it here. And I highly recommend that you do (though it does tell what happens, so if you want to avoid spoilers, wait). Love in the Time of Cholera. But I would like to reread it. At any rate, even though I really liked Memories. I think I...

Saturday, December 22, 2012. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? I don't know what else to do with this except copy the excerpts that I underlined while reading that totally cracked me up. Also, she throws in some good dating advice in there. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? Duante was also, unfortunately, a tyrannical asshole. Maybe I should have gleaned this from the joy with which he told the story about murdering a cow with a massive gun. Is he a narc? They’re these inspirational memoirs abo...

http://miss-c-reads.blogspot.com/2012/12/deadeye-dick.html
Saturday, December 22, 2012. One of the philosophies KV introduces in this book is that of life being a peephole. It didn't stick with me as much as some of the others I've read in his books, but it's an interesting idea. Deadeye Dick: A Novel. KV throwing out the main symbols of the book - a bizarre self-spark noting at the beginning of a novel:. And because the main character learned how to cook from the servants and loved it so much, there are several recipes throughout the book. A couple:.

Thursday, January 24, 2013. Devil in the White City, part 1. So my boyfriend, sister, sister's best friend, and I started a long distance book club together. Initially, my boyfriend and I were doing one together because we are so far apart, and then my sister got excited and pulled her friend in. This is the first book the four of us are reading together, and this was my first email about Part 1. Devil in the White City. Part I: Frozen Music. Anonymous deaths came early and often". This book makes me cur...

miss c reads: Little Women
http://miss-c-reads.blogspot.com/2013/01/little-women.html
Sunday, January 27, 2013. There are many free books available online, and I've downloaded quite a few classics for times of need or ambition. This was a time of need and not ambition, so I decided to reread one of my absolute favorites: Little Women. What helped you then? In spite of the new sorrow, it was a very happy time, so happy that Laurie could not bear to disturb it by a word. It took him a little while to recover from his surprise at the cure of his first, and as he had firmly believed, his ...

Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Wednesday, August 24, 2011. In a Sunburned Country. In a Sunburned Country. I liked the book a lot. As with all of Bryson's books, it's funny enough often enough to make me laugh out loud and get made fun of by whoever is around me while I'm reading. I figure if a book makes me laugh and teaches me something (even if I don't remember terribly well), then it is probably a pretty good thing to read. Thursday, August 11, 2011. An excerpt from the article:. A link to the book:.

Saturday, December 22, 2012. Breakfast of Champions: A Novel. In his own words:. Some thoughts on the founding of America:. The teachers told the children that this was when their continent was discovered by human beings. Actually, millions of human beings were already living full and imaginative lives on the continent in 1492. That was simply the year in which sea pirates began to cheat and rob and kill them. Sunday, July 24, 2011. This is a book that I found at the teacher’s yard sale at the end of the year (so that we could lighten our loads when moving across the world) on the free table. I only had a few weeks left, but I was confident that I could squeeze in another good book. The Know-It-All: One Man’s Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World. My summaries in text, his words in quotes.]. Jacobs tells the story of a told to him by a lawyer friend about a Middle Eastern potentate who gather...

http://miss-c-reads.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 3, 2011. In fact, it's so short, I'll just repost it here for you to read:. Our first experience with love comes from our parents, and this interaction becomes the pattern for future romantic relationships. Children assume that their parents love them, so it's only logical that they come to see the way their parents treat them as loving behavior, even when that behavior is painful. If you had a stormy relationship with one of your parents, full of fighting and making up, you may be unc...
