Curious Pages: Georgie
http://curiouspages.blogspot.com/2010/10/georgie.html
By Robert Bright, 1944. For Halloween, another one of my earliest favorites. 8220;Up in the attic of this little house there lived a little ghost. His name was Georgie.”. I believe this started my as-yet-unrealized childhood wish to sleep in an attic. Note the jaunty buttons on Georgie’s ghostly shroud. 8220;Every night at the same time he gave the loose board on the stairs a little creak”. But he was unable to find a new home that suited. This drawing always scared me, for some reason. So how did he die?

The Little Red Engine. By Diana Ross and Lewitt-Him, 1942. The Little Red Engine was known only as number 394. Unlike the big black engine, "Pride o' the North" and the big green engine "Beauty of the South," 394 never went anywhere. Worse still, he had to listen to the constant boasting from the bigger engines. Throughout, the Little Red Engine repeats affirmations: "I can. I really can." And, "I'm sure. These sound a lot less wishy-washy than that "I think. But he doesn't. This is a kid's book. When yo...

LANE SMITH on It's a Book. Time for another installment of. WHAT IN THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING? Is it shameless to write about my own book? Lane, a book about a book, a pirate-loving monkey, a jackass of a jackass. . . just what in the heck were you thinking? Books surround me in every room of my house. I like arranging and rearranging books on my bookshelves. In other words, I am a nerd. The reason I made the book? My first version featured a kid. I dummied up some ruffs showing a dummy of a kid who...

Here’s an article about my art featured in the July 2012 issue of Abstraks. Magazine. After reading it I realize I definitely need to work on organizing my answers better and cutting back on the rambling for any future interviews, but the writer asked a lot of thoughtful questions and I had a good time (even if she did misspell my name). Of an Inland Soul to Sea. Willful Explorations of a Vaguely Literary Nature. An alphabetical collection of pet peeves and nit-pickery. Because we humor my pedantic nature. Vs Esthetic : While technically (" ") both correct - the latter is cited as an American spelling, the former as European - the former is preferred for its fidelity to the subtleties of the word's pronunciation. This does not, even a little bit, mean that you don't care. It means that you're torn. Vs Epitaph vs. Epigram. I suppose that'...

Doing your civic duty. Celebrating my favorite candy-laced holiday. Best Chilly-weather Costume Ever. And who's to say Professor Trelawney doesn't wear great big baggy sweaters and scarves upon scarves upon scarves. (Hey whaddaya know! I spelled her name right.). What else means Fall? Of an Inland Soul to Sea. Willful Explorations of a Vaguely Literary Nature. It's going to be a truly lovely year. What did I do this weekend? Why, I endured an epically uncomfortable seat for the pleasure of watching Tannhauser "just like the Ancients! It was amazing. You could see stars. (Of course, when I'm not in New Hampshire, 70% of the constellations I see are 'Orion's Belt', but never mind that). The conductor was delightful. Let's hear it for the Ankara Devlet orchestra. This happens a lot: an a...

Of an Inland Soul to Sea. Willful Explorations of a Vaguely Literary Nature. And Meanwhile, on the Application Front. We're in that funny transition period between active school life and "what teachers do in the summer." And guys, it's not what you may have imagined, watching my middle and high school teachers pack up the classroom at the end of the year. We Are Not On Vacation. Which is fine and all, but does require a sliiight adjustment. Guys, this is MY FAVORITE. Posted by EB CT. Past the Houses -.

For a few weeks, Lorna Glover had been dating Felipe Perez, a boy from the office where she worked. But she was perplexed. She could not work out what his feelings for her were. Her friend, Sonya, suggested she consult the Emotional Detective Agency in Baker Street, who specialize in just this type of situation. Lorna said, “I’ve heard you can detect the emotional life in men.”. Agent Melancholy said, in a soft voice, “Ah, yes, we do our best. But you have to understand that this is the final f...Lorna s...

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Most of us are familiar with sesame seeds, often toasted. Some of us are also familiar with sesame oil. Often used in dressings, and then there is tahini. Sesame paste, commonly known as one of the few ingredients used in hummus. Or hummos). I also recently learned that there are black sesame seeds; I'm curious to find out how easy they are (or aren't) to find. I also found these interesting facts and tidbits on About.com. As well as one of the first plants. I love hummus with a ...
