Curious Palate

As I explore recipes for their taste and the process of making them, I will also explore interesting facts about the food or dish. For example, how to grow a vegetable, the culture or history related to the dish, or the science that explains why something did or didn't turn out as I hoped. Having a curious palate, I hope to try a wide variety of foods.

Curious Palate: "Sesame!" says-a-me

http://curiouspalate.blogspot.com/2009/07/sesame-says-me.html

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Most of us are familiar with sesame seeds, often toasted. Some of us are also familiar with sesame oil. Often used in dressings, and then there is tahini. Sesame paste, commonly known as one of the few ingredients used in hummus. Or hummos). I also recently learned that there are black sesame seeds; I'm curious to find out how easy they are (or aren't) to find. I also found these interesting facts and tidbits on About.com. As well as one of the first plants. I love hummus with a ...

Curious Palate: Homemade Marzipan!

http://curiouspalate.blogspot.com/2009/07/homemade-marzipan.html

Tuesday, July 14, 2009. An experience. Not really difficult, worth the experience once, not sure yet if it's worth a second time. A recipe. My memory of marzipan. Goes back to mid-elementary school when my neighbor and I stopped in his kitchen. He reached to the top of the fridge, pulled something down, took a little bit, offered me some, and I "discovered" one of the best things I ever tasted: marzipan. It's common in Europe; my neighbor's father was from Hungary. On to serious notes:. If I try marzipan...

Curious Palate: All About Almonds

http://curiouspalate.blogspot.com/2009/07/all-about-almonds.html

Thursday, July 16, 2009. I said to the almond tree,. Sister, speak to me of God.". And the almond tree blossomed. This quotation is from one of my favorite books, Report to Greco. Since then, I've been enthralled by the idea of a blossoming almond tree in a field in Greece. Almonds are one of my favorite "nuts" and I find that depending on how they are prepared (or left alone), their sweetness now reminds me of the quotation above. Earlier this week when I made marzipan. Almond tea, the water steeped.

Curious Palate: Apricot Galette recipe

http://curiouspalate.blogspot.com/2009/07/apricot-galette-recipe.html

Thursday, July 9, 2009. Making rhubarb crisp, I wondered about the difference between a crisp, crumble, and buckle. Recipetips.com. Offers a thorough explanation of many fruit desserts, but not for the particular type of fruit pastry I once made but couldn't find in my files. After trying to figure out its name, I finally gave a wild shot searching for "dessert with fruit and crust around edge." It actually led me to what I wanted: galette. Some recipes are the type of dessert I remembered; some. Combine...

Curious Palate: Asian Chicken Salad

http://curiouspalate.blogspot.com/2009/07/asian-chicken-salad.html

Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Is here and cool salads are appreciated. This recipe. Is delicious and I think it tasted even better the next day. Unfortunately, I couldn't share this with my husband. He’s allergic to cabbage and like napa cabbage. Is a Chinese cabbage. It was easy to make,. But it does require a lot of chopping and many ingredients. The recipe begins, “Put the [2T] oil in a heavy skillet… and toast the walnuts…” Please note, you don't need oil to toast nuts. 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

Curious Pages

By Robert Bright, 1944. For Halloween, another one of my earliest favorites. 8220;Up in the attic of this little house there lived a little ghost. His name was Georgie.”. I believe this started my as-yet-unrealized childhood wish to sleep in an attic. Note the jaunty buttons on Georgie’s ghostly shroud. 8220;Every night at the same time he gave the loose board on the stairs a little creak”. But he was unable to find a new home that suited. This drawing always scared me, for some reason. So how did he die?

Curious Pages - fiction and nonfiction

For a few weeks, Lorna Glover had been dating Felipe Perez, a boy from the office where she worked. But she was perplexed. She could not work out what his feelings for her were. Her friend, Sonya, suggested she consult the Emotional Detective Agency in Baker Street, who specialize in just this type of situation. Lorna said, “I’ve heard you can detect the emotional life in men.”. Agent Melancholy said, in a soft voice, “Ah, yes, we do our best. But you have to understand that this is the final f...Lorna s...

curious paper

I am a maker. I sit in a small room surrounded by paper people and creatures. Sometimes i let them go. To good homes only. Each of the curious items you will see here are original and one off. They have been made using old, torn, reclaimed and beautiful papers and cloth with the odd item of old, found treasure. Tuesday, 5 January 2016. I would like to say that i am finding this post everyday in January easy. But i am not. It would seem that the odds of it continuing are stacking up against me. I dared to...
