Volume 92, Issue 3. I got the topic for this blog (newspaper/student media musings) from another student editor at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. The blog can be found here: The Editor's Desk. Today, our third Current Sauce. This semester will be hitting the newsstands. This will be my fourth overall, as I completed one issue over the summer. Several of us went to a Society of Professional Journalists. I also spoke to several student editors at the MSCNE 2006 conference. These last few weeks ha...

I like this picture because there are glasses in it. I like this picture because the story is funny. Darn those Martians. Posted by Jamie Webb @ 5:12 PM. Dr Lim's class looks like fun. Can I take it for no credit? And without paying tuition for it? Heck, I only want to play with you guys on the blogs. I'm a senior journalism student with a concentration in news editorial or print journalism. I'm the editor of my campus newspaper. I hope I don't die this semester. View my complete profile.

Here we come to the dreaded "A" word. I mentioned a few weeks back that I was going to discuss ad sales, but some other interesting topics came to mind when I was gathering my thoughts. But now the time has come. One of the misconceptions about small newspapers is that we don't have enough news to cover. This is not true. The problem is that the news hole is so small because there aren't enough ads being sold. Another problem is the growing popularity of Craigslist. Our adviser also sent an e-mail to one...

On Tuesday evening, my opinions editor Aaron Pizani. And I decided to call an emergency editor’s meeting. We were unhappy with the progress made during the news meeting the previous night. There were four main topics of discussion and hurdles to topple during this meeting. Hurdle One: Editors' Pre-Meetings Meetings. Katie Lopez (news editor), Andi Bass (life editor), Kristi George (sports editor), David Dinsmore. Over the past week or so, I’ve spoken through Facebook.com. One hurdle down, three to go.

Volume 92, Issue 7. During the first week or so of September, we saw flyers up around campus that simply said: "Do you deserve to live? 10/11/06 H.W.C.". Brought one over to our good friends at the University Police station, who simply told him that it was just a hoax and to tear down any more of the flyers he saw. He managed to keep one copy, which we had stored in our files. Good thing, too. An NSU student wrote a Letter to the Editor. Our copy editor, and Aaron, our opinions editor. Posted by Jamie We...

Design on the Web. One of the biggest gripes we at the paper have is the seeming lack of customization options offered through College Publisher.com. Which is the company The Current Sauce. Uses to publish our paper on the Web for free. Unless you really know the system, there is not that much room to make the pages interesting. Take The Orion Online. And The Daily Mississippian Online. There's another college paper site that I like, the Fairfield Mirror. No offense, but it doesn't look that interesting.

Letters to the Editor. One of the things we haven't decided about yet is what to do with letters to the editor. I hear differing views on them - some people (like one of our former teachers Dr. Ralston) say that you shouldn't edit them, but some say you should. If you do, though, what's the proper way to go about editing? Do you just change spellings or do you make the letter more grammatically correct? I did a little searching around and found several variation of the same policy. Stipulates that letter...

One of the fun perks of being editor of the paper is being able to go on conferences. The MSCNE one I went to in July. Was one of those. I just got back from one this weekend to St. Louis, the College Media Advisers. One A lot of people I met at MSCNE were there, as well as many other students and advisers from other college papers. Ten of us from NSU. Here's a list of new ideas:. Search the Internet for little known information about the city, school, mascot, faculty and administration. Ask around about...
