Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. D2S3: Clatteringshaws Loch to Stranraer. A glorious morning, and what a view to wake up to: the mirrorlike waters of Clatteringshaws Loch in the heart of Galloway Forest Park, right there in front of my tent (picture). And all mine: not another soul for, literally, miles. Not quite mirrorlike enough to see my haggard reflection clearly, which after two weeks of cycling is probably just as well. Dunbar to Stranraer has been a memorab...

Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. F2B3: Durham to Ashington. A delightful day of windless sunshine up the flattish north-east coast. After the headwinds and hills of the previous two days, my bike felt like an electric-assist model. At Sunderland I passed by the endpoint of one of that Coast to Coast route, marked by this rather splendid monument. The Shields Ferry took me over the Tyne for more lovely coastal riding, with big fresh skies and wide spaces, up to Blyt...

Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. F2B4: Ashington to Bamburgh. Another glorious day of bluesky coastal cycling, a day of space and air and seasmells and freshness and fish and chips. And some lager drinking with Newcastle fans. The castle proved a splendidly suitable terminus for the trip, with a real sense of arrival. I wanted a sense of fish and chips, though, so I went back to Seahouses. Seahouses also provided a friendly tourist info who directed me to the smoke...

Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. P2G 4: Newark to Goole. Was a flat trundle alongside the Trent. Pleasant cycling on a warm morning, but the Danube it's not. The Trent valley consists largely of power stations - you keep expecting the Super Mario Brothers to pop up out of the cooling towers - relieved by the odd high-security mental institution. I hope that today is the nearest I ever get to Rampton, but the way things are going, you never know. Staying at a Travel...

The TPT takes you parallel to Hessle Road, not Hull's wealthiest suburb, along well-chosen traffic-free cycle paths such as this, where, er, cycling is prohibited. A tad further on is the old Hornsea station, site of a TPT end marker that echoes the one in Southport. Miles today: 50ish (inc backtracking to Ferriby). Miles in total: 200ish (Southport to Hornsea) 225ish (in total). The only in...

Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. M2H12: Harrogate to York. Back home to York - a service stop for changing socks, offloading camping gear, eating curry etc - so a short day. In fact, all today's highlights were in Knaresborough, traditional home of 16th-century prophetess Mother Shipton. OK, yes, I made that up, but then most of Mother S's predictions were made up by some bloke called Hindley in 1862. Still, Knaresborough looked very nice (picture). M2H Mull to Hull.

Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. M2H9: Rest day in Penrith. A rest day in Penrith today, sitting out indifferent weather and doing service-town admin such as haircuts. The hostel ( Wayfarers Penrith. I took a bus to Keswick, whose shops were rammed with walkers chased off the hills by the rain, and spent the afternoon strolling round the lake (picture), which was busy with shoppers chased off the town centre by the walkers. Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. B2Y2: Dolgellau to Shrewsbury: Rain stopped play. Bah Got as far as Shrewsbury and then gave up. It had rained incessantly since I started from Barmouth, and I was soaking and miserable. Mending punctures in driving rain with trench-foot is no fun. En route I went over the Bwlch Oerddrws on the A470. I'll do this route again properly when I'm in a better frame of mind. And when there's less of the Atlantic on top of me. The most not...

Barmouth to Yarmouth,. Rhyming coast-to-coast bike tours around Britain. Rhyme, but not much reason. This occasional blog will cover an open-ended series of rhyming bike rides in Britain. It will start in July 2010 with Poole (jewel of the south coast) to Goole (fag end of the Humber estuary); swiftly followed by Barmouth (biscuit-tin pride of the Welsh riviera) to [Great] Yarmouth (haven for the natural world - well, natural gas rigs, anyway). Adventure that I did (and blogged about. M2H Mull to Hull.
