The name fairly well explains the idea, but being able to carry all of your supplies (minus food, which can get super heavy) from start to finish without the help of anyone else says a lot about your determination. This is where panniers and specialized equipment come into play in order to carry all of your gear.

Personally, I only use a hammock during summer unless I have a great winter sleep pad. Which brings me to my next item. Bring it. I like the mummy bags, but bring one you can afford and one that packs as small as possible. This is by far the biggest item I carry on my tours, but it’s an absolute must. This is what we do.

What The HECK Should I Take: Camping. The alarm goes off. I’m extremely tired and feel awful, either from working out a bit too much or drinking a bit too much. I should have learned to take everything in moderation by now, but “excess is the best” seems to be imprinted behind my eyelids. I can’t move my legs without soreness rearing it’s all too familiar face. I find the cold half of the pillow and lay my head back down. Just a few more…. Please let these greenish yellow lines on my clock give me peace.

Tuesday, 16 January 2007. Idaho/Washington to the Pacific Ocean. We only spent 1 day and travelled 35 miles in Idaho. We were just on the northern tip of Idaho, a lovely area of mountains,pine forests, and lakes. It is logging country. We also did some time travel and moved into Pacific time. There were a lot of these nests alongside Lake Pend Oreille and there was at least one chick in most of them. We spent 9 days and travelled 328 miles in Washington. A very cold start but! Tuesday, 9 January 2007. We spent 14 days and travelled 654 miles in Wyoming. Moving on the scenery improved as we headed through Red Rock country to Wind River Indian Reservation. At Fort Washakie we took the opportunity to do some window shopping. I really wanted to buy some of the beautiful Indian arts and crafts.
