The Guppy Went With Gusto. After working in schools in The Gambia, Scotland, New York City and Boston, I am now teaching in Douala, Cameroon. The Credit Crunch Hits (Rented) Home. Unfortunately my quest ended in failure. The customer service agent informed me that, since I carry no debt or mortgage (HA! Alas, I was incorrect in this assumption. As banks have belatedly moved to tighten their lending and credit provision strategies, I remain out of the UK financial loop, at least for the next six months.

Adventures in Living: November 2005

Wednesday, November 30, 2005. The sounds of evening call to prayer can be quite beautiful. Morning call to prayer, at five ish, are a little bit less inspiring, but taking a bath in the deepening night, as I am serenaded by imams (in a fashion), is pretty cool. Especially when the weather is as dry and relatively cool as tonight. Life has been a blur lately no posts in a while are the result. Two Fridays ago I had an experience with a mason that maybe shouldn’t be recorded, but was very instructive .

Adventures in Living: April 2006
http://zacshepherd.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Today has been an exercise in patience, more so than most days here, which I think is saying a lot. This morning I went to the Anglican mission school an upper basic (middle school) where I am trying to get their computer lab up and going. I arrived expecting to have a chance to check out their machines and get things ready to start lessons next week, but found some Nigerians working there. I am not their biggest fan. Then he asked them if they had suggestions, which I disagreed ...

Adventures in Living: May 2005

Wednesday, May 25, 2005. How wrong I was. Life can be great sometimes. There are so many ways to learn things. Like when you think you are done with something and you wake up. Literally in this case, I woke up and got hit with a bag of cement that was two different projects both screaming for my attention. Well, not screaming so much as just behaving like truant junior high students. Everytime I think I am out, the. Y pull me back in. Posted by Zac at 9:28 AM. Tuesday, May 24, 2005. I was a Peace Corps V...

The Guppy Went With Gusto. After working in schools in The Gambia, Scotland, New York City and Boston, I am now teaching in Douala, Cameroon. To the bodega, then across the street to wait for the pizza to be warmed over. Accosted from another bench by a man ominously wonders, among other things, “Who said, 'Houston, we have a problem? The sentries laugh amongst themselves while discussing football. Muttering from my neighbours about quotas - “bullshit, man.”. What's your last name? Some thirty minutes la...

The Guppy Went With Gusto. After working in schools in The Gambia, Scotland, New York City and Boston, I am now teaching in Douala, Cameroon. My stay in Scotland. It's been nearly three months since I left Scotland and, as I catch up on some posts I wanted to do, I decided to write a little about my experience in Edinburgh. Cramond Island, Edinburgh, in February 2009. While in Edinburgh I was fortunate to have several visitors from the U.S., as well as a couple of friends staying around London...So I ...

Adventures in Living: June 2005

Monday, June 27, 2005. All praise be to Allah. It's been in the 80's every day, plenty of humidity, and people start to complain about the heat! I love it, great way to get ready for the real heat I am going to be getting plenty of right soon. Also, from my brother: "It was 120 here today, in case WNY is still a little behind the summer schedule we've got plenty of degrees to send your way." So, I mean, mid-80's is really quite a treat. Adventures in Living: January 2006
http://zacshepherd.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 28, 2006. Today was a bit of a buzz overstimulated or worn out, I was feeling a bit like I had been in performance mode for too long, so here is a series of factoids. In the morning was a naming ceremony nyambo (meaning small, limited ceremony instead of all day party type naming ceremony) for Ndey Njie’s new baby girl. Her name is Awa, like one of the mothers I live with. It was laundry day Ami Njie does my washing, and irons shirts and pants. Fresh clothes are great. Another entry pul...

Saturday, August 20, 2005. Day two with electricity. Here I am, in an air conditioned room, on the internet for the second time in two days.
