Hi, thanks for visiting my blog, you can leave a message by clicking on comments below each post. You can also see more photos in my photo gallery here. Sunday, 20 September 2009. We live in a complex called Aoyuan, its like a closed off community, Aoyuan is quite a posh one, we have pillars, fountains and statues, this is the view from my balcony, in the distance you can see our grocers. I'll post some photos of Chinese type stuff soon. My room is small but has a balcony which is nice. DPRK for a day.

Hi, thanks for visiting my blog, you can leave a message by clicking on comments below each post. You can also see more photos in my photo gallery here. Monday, 25 January 2010. I spent a few days in Harbin over New Years which is is the north of China close to Russia. I met up with my flat mate Ben and his brother Charlie who was in China for a couple of weeks. At its lowest, the temperature went down to -38°C (-36°F for you oldies) while we were there which is unbelievably cold. Sunday, 24 January 2010.

Hi, thanks for visiting my blog, you can leave a message by clicking on comments below each post. You can also see more photos in my photo gallery here. Sunday, 13 February 2011. This is a Buddhist Wenshu Temple. Shoes at the Wenshu Temple. Lots of shoes at the Wenshu Temple. The streets can get very crowded, the red, white and yellow rabbits are for Chinese new year, 2011 is the year of the Rabbit, which to me doesn’t sound quite as cool as the year of the tiger. Hi, thanks for visiting my blog, you can leave a message by clicking on comments below each post. You can also see more photos in my photo gallery here. Thursday, 21 October 2010. Me and Russell have recently moved in to a new apartment here are some photos. Doesn't look too great from the outside. This isn't the biggest spider I've seen here but he still looks pretty menacing. The spiders are usually outside and don't cause any bother. Sunday, 3 October 2010. Halfie on the Mainland: The Road We Rode

http://halfieonthemainland.blogspot.com/2012/05/road-we-rode.html

Halfie on the Mainland. On traveling, teaching, learning and living in far western China. Thursday, May 3, 2012. The Road We Rode. Finally, here's the epic post about our Vietnam bike trip that I've been promising for a while. For our route, see the map. View Vietnam Bike Trip. In a larger map. It all started in Hanoi, at our couchsurfing host's apartment. From Bac Giang we headed northwest, aiming for Ha Giang, the capital of Ha Giang Province, which we had heard had "stunningly beautiful" mountain road...

Halfie on the Mainland: Camping at Kanas

http://halfieonthemainland.blogspot.com/2012/07/camping-at-kanas.html

Halfie on the Mainland. On traveling, teaching, learning and living in far western China. Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Kanas Lake is a long, skinny lake (a "finger lake") near Kazakhstan and Russia, spanning only a few kilometers in width, but stretching up through a glacier-carved valley towards its source high up in the mountains. The ticket price for Kanas was rather steep, so I was glad we actually got to use the tent we borrowed and save some money. We weren't out in the backcountry (certainly not ...

Halfie on the Mainland: Meat and Wheat

http://halfieonthemainland.blogspot.com/2012/06/meat-and-wheat.html

Halfie on the Mainland. On traveling, teaching, learning and living in far western China. Thursday, June 7, 2012. It's getting to that time of year when I'm sick of Chinese food. Luckily, Xinjiang's Uighur cuisine adds some diversity to the palate. Xinjiang food is mostly wheat- and meat-based - mutton, nang (flatbread), and noodles. The freshly pulled noodles in banmian beat the best pasta I've ever had anywhere. I'm going to miss this stuff when I go home! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Halfie on the Mainland: China's disaffected youth / My obscured identity

http://halfieonthemainland.blogspot.com/2012/05/chinas-disaffected-youth-my-obscured.html

Halfie on the Mainland. On traveling, teaching, learning and living in far western China. Wednesday, May 23, 2012. China's disaffected youth / My obscured identity. Sitting in a smoky KTV (karaoke) room on Saturday night, I was painfully aware of two things: I don't know how to talk to China's "lost generation", and it's awkward to look like a Uighur in a room full of Han Chinese people who don't know you're American. Me: Hi, what's your name? Him: (something I can't remember). Me: Are you from Urumqi?

Halfie on the Mainland: Turpan / 吐鲁番

http://halfieonthemainland.blogspot.com/2012/05/turpan.html

Halfie on the Mainland. On traveling, teaching, learning and living in far western China. Saturday, May 5, 2012. We have three shorter breaks in the spring: Tomb-Sweeping Day in April, May 1, and Dragonboat Festival in June. The long weekend isn't enough time to go too far away, but it is a good opportunity to see more of Xinjiang. During my last day in Turpan, I headed east on the national highway that leads out of Xinjiang. As I was biking, I met a Chinese girl and a Taiwanese Brazilian who were al...

Halfie on the Mainland: My new favorite place in Xinjiang

http://halfieonthemainland.blogspot.com/2012/05/my-new-favorite-place-in-xinjiang.html

Halfie on the Mainland. On traveling, teaching, learning and living in far western China. Wednesday, May 9, 2012. My new favorite place in Xinjiang. On a Friday night in the end of April, a friend and I boarded a night bus and got off the next morning in Yining City, Yili, Xinjiang, gateway to some of the most beautiful places in Xinjiang (and arguably all of China). Where the only thing worth seeing was this cool calligraphy:. Check out the beautiful rugs and embroidered bedding. After a short hike duri...

In Government Posters Promoting Honesty, Images of Disney’s Pinocchio. June 10, 2014. Dan In Encinitas

Friday, January 2, 2009. Do you remember when. You built your first bike ramp and were kind of afraid of it at first. But you went for it anyway. Then started charging it as hard as you could. And blocked it up so you could go higher and farther. And what a rush it was. Well, I remember, and I got to relive all of that today. Tuesday, December 30, 2008. I can't remember the last time I had two weeks off from work. It's been epic! Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Rest : the wonder drug. In the weeks followin...
