As the Top of the World Turns: The Good Intentions Paving Company
http://globaloctopus.blogspot.com/2005/07/good-intentions-paving-company.html
As the Top of the World Turns. Ruminations and Rants from Laguna Beach. July 3, 2005. The Good Intentions Paving Company. I watched a bit of "Live 8.". It was clear that at the heart of it was a genuine concern for the poor and the suffering in Africa, even if wrapped in many layers of media hype. Aside from raising funds, though, there was a political message, calling for increased aid and debt forgiveness for African countries, and a lowering of trade barriers. But at the core of the African problem is...

As the Top of the World Turns: Things Are Changing
http://globaloctopus.blogspot.com/2009/11/things-are-changing.html
As the Top of the World Turns. Ruminations and Rants from Laguna Beach. November 13, 2009. Seems like the ogress has embraced the one-state solution, albeit without the right of return, and she'd like to finesse letting all the Palestinians on the West Bank vote right away. Would she also let them travel and work throughout the country, on the same roads, dismantle the roadblocks, etc? In any case, Oslo is just about over, and apartheid will not stand. As the Top of the World Turns: Justice Douglas Invents Marital Privacy (What Roe Is All About – Part III)
http://globaloctopus.blogspot.com/2005/12/justice-douglas-invents-marital.html
As the Top of the World Turns. Ruminations and Rants from Laguna Beach. December 4, 2005. Justice Douglas Invents Marital Privacy (What Roe Is All About – Part III). About with bladder cancer. And the press of work have delayed my pressing on with my discussion of the constitutional law issues surrounding Roe. Recall that in my first post on the subject. In my second post. I went on to discuss “substantive due process,” a doctrine the Court has used to overrule certain state laws as violating...381 US...

As the Top of the World Turns: A Low, Dishonest Decade
http://globaloctopus.blogspot.com/2009/12/low-dishonest-decade.html
As the Top of the World Turns. Ruminations and Rants from Laguna Beach. December 30, 2009. A Low, Dishonest Decade. Rod Dreher lists five changes. He thinks significant in the last decade:. The humbling of American power. The humbling of market capitalism. The collapse of American conservatism. The rise of gay marriage. The globe is going to warm, no matter what. I came up with four more:. Let's hope it doesn't end in war, as did the rise of Germany. 4 The decline of fertility. Most marked in Europe ...

Lost in a world awhirl: When you know the right people...
http://lostinaworldawhirl.blogspot.com/2014/09/when-you-know-right-people.html
Lost in a world awhirl. Wednesday, September 17, 2014. When you know the right people. Wonderful things can happen! I've found so many of them through the years and the doors that have opened have amazed me! One of those belongs to Anji. Given the "rabbit hole" I've been in of late, I visited her a few weeks ago to see what I might find in early aviation postcards, thinking I might find one of Louis Bleriot. The 3rd card is of Glenn Curtiss. Airborne over Hammondsport, NY. A motorcycle racer turned a...

Lost in a world awhirl: Whack-a-mole!
http://lostinaworldawhirl.blogspot.com/2014/12/whack-mole.html
Lost in a world awhirl. Saturday, December 13, 2014. I've started to put my head up more than once here the past 6 weeks, but every time I can almost see over the edge of my burrow, it feels like someone takes a swing at it! Thus my reference to the arcade/midway game. Healthwise, I'm doing OK; one small round of a bug and a different kind of round with a crown that decided it didn't like the molar it was on after 20 years. It got pulled last week; stitch came out and all seems fine there as well. To mak...

Lost in a world awhirl: March 2014
http://lostinaworldawhirl.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Lost in a world awhirl. Tuesday, March 25, 2014. A hint of green outside! I only wish my lungs weren't so jealous that they'd decided they needed a bit of green of their own! I'm in the 2nd week of a battle against a "mild" round of pneumonia they caught in a chest x-ray I had done two weeks ago tomorrow. Tomorrow I'm in for bloodwork and another x-ray and, since there's still a bit of color coming up, a refill on that antibiotic. I now know how a turtle feels when he's on his back! Monday, March 03, 2014.

Lost in a world awhirl: End game...
http://lostinaworldawhirl.blogspot.com/2015/04/end-game.html
Lost in a world awhirl. Tuesday, April 07, 2015. They have come up with a pain regimen that alleviates that and right now I can be in the low 90's or even the upper 80's and not hurt, so they've been able to reduce my usage back to something more "normal" for someone to have at home. That will help a lot. If we can't deal with it at home then I'll come back here to their care center.it's not home, but still nicer than the ward. In the settling of things my sister asked me "what about memorials"? I though...

As the Top of the World Turns: Street Games
http://globaloctopus.blogspot.com/2005/10/street-games.html
As the Top of the World Turns. Ruminations and Rants from Laguna Beach. October 3, 2005. I can't claim to have been a street kid. Protected Jewish nerd is more like it. I got my strength from lugging books on unlikely subjects from the 96th Street Library to 89th- and back. But I did escape to street life every now and then, between doses of Milton and Schopenhauer (well, not really, but close, for a 9-year-old). This is a " Spaldeen. Rougher and maybe more fun were Ringalevio and Johnny on the Pony.

As the Top of the World Turns: The Biggest Story of Our Time: Breeders, Heretics, Libertines, and Ethnic Cleansers
http://globaloctopus.blogspot.com/2006/11/biggest-story-of-our-time-breeders.html
As the Top of the World Turns. Ruminations and Rants from Laguna Beach. November 27, 2006. The Biggest Story of Our Time: Breeders, Heretics, Libertines, and Ethnic Cleansers. Mark Steyn the inimitable once again writes. Steyn relates this trend, among other things, to a brief interview in the New York Times, given by the incoming Episcopal Bishopess, Katharine Jefferts Schori. Schori boasts. Of the demograpic decline of her denomination:. The Shakers, who practiced celibacy, and the Skoptsy. Steyn relat...
