Breaking up is hard to do: on culling a book hoard. Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 - 9:12 am. Do you throw out books? When you buy a book, is it marriage, or is it just a getting-to-know-you date? Oh, the agony. How can you make this decision? It's true that some. I guess the answer to that question is this: owning a book, I think, is quite different from just reading it. This will sound a bit weird, but for me a book is more than an orderly little pile of paper. It represents, in material form, the ...Somet...

Brit-picking tool for writers and other word-lovers: the British National Corpus - Fictualities
http://fictualities.livejournal.com/88436.html
Brit-picking tool for writers and other word-lovers: the British National Corpus. Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 - 4:10 pm. Have you ever wondered how the British use a word like "pavement" or "jumper"? In fandom, non-British writers with such questions can get their fic Brit-picked, and that's a terrific idea. But Brit-picking has its limitations. What if you consult several British fans and they disagree? Would a British person really use a word in the way you want your character to use it? If an American...

Index by Category (Tag). June 17th, 2015. What I've been working on: ShinySDR. As vaguely promised before. Another update on what I've been working on for the past couple of years:. Why yes, I am terrible at naming things. Is a software-defined radio. Specifically, it is in the same space as Gqrx. ShinySDR is basically my I want my own one of these project (the UI still shows signs of I’ll just do what Gqrx did for now ), but it does have some unique features. I'll just quote myself from the README:.

Blockfreq, C , Lua and random thoughts - Lukes Weblog. Blockfreq, C , Lua and random thoughts. Mar 25th, 2012 06:25 pm. Yuin Huzami, The Ripple Effect. I'm still hopping programming langauges. Cool that after so much hacking there are still new ones that are actually important to learn. So today I wrote my first random Lua program, called blockfreq. I'd be mighty obliged for any tips on how to write it better. Intel did a good job on these chips: the hardware is nicer to integrate with than most software...

Are warm and fuzzy villains a good idea? - Fictualities
http://fictualities.livejournal.com/84395.html
Are warm and fuzzy villains a good idea? Friday, November 9th, 2007 - 8:17 am. So, how do like your villains? That is, how evil (or not evil) should they be to make for a good story? Do you prefer vast impersonal forces of doom (like the distant, unutterably alien forces in HP Lovecraft)? Or do you like your villains to be flawed, misguided creatures who have at least the potential for some kind of redemption, even if they never get there (Gollum in Tolkien, and maybe now Snape in HP)? As the series prog...

My Turn on the Horsybird. Oct 24th, 2013 at 12:35 PM. Hi, LJ folks! This is a repost from Facebook, but unfortunately the situation is still quite relevant. Onward:. Friends, I did something dumb. A couple of months ago I went to one of those payday loan places. Well, it was necessary at the time, and Ive been paying it back faithfully every other week.and then of course reborrowing, because I still have bills to pay. Id like to pay it off completely in a month. 9 comments Leave a comment. I'm a 'residen...

Goodbye 2006, Howdy 2007! - Luke's Weblog

Goodbye 2006, Howdy 2007! Goodbye 2006, Howdy 2007! Jan 1st, 2007 01:23 am. A new weblog for a new year! My excuse is that I'm learning Squeak Smalltalk so I'm going to need a way to post screenshots, something that's beyond the capabilities of my custom weblog. And frankly the thought of using Blogger. S Emacs-user-hostile web interface makes me want to scratch my eyes out. So here I am on Livejournal in the good company of my internet-buddies darius and xach. Twice I've been told "oh, you have magic!

Nov 16th, 2009 12:31 pm. The Erlang User Conference. In Stockholm was a lot of fun! Thank you everybody at Erlang Training and Consulting for the excellent organisation. My favourite talk of the day was Patrik Nyblom on the development of SMP support in the BEAM virtual machine. He was entertaining andalso inspiring: that is some really hot technology that our programs are sitting on. I'm reminded of Klacke's talk in London last year: Erlang programmers do. Is the time to make the most of it. I'm headed ...
