David Loy began Zen practice in 1971, with a sesshin (meditation retreat) in Honolulu led by Yamada Koun-roshi, director of the Sanbo Zen. He did koan study with Yamada-roshi and Robert Aitken-roshi. In 1984 he moved to Kamakura, Japan, to continue intensive practice with Yamada-roshi. He finished the formal koan curriculum in 1988 and was given the dharma name Tetsu’un Wisdom cloud. David R.
