Dean's Development

Thursday, 2 July 2015. Confidence in Art and Life. It's been a long, long time since I last updated, there's a reason for that. Since last I posted I did some intern work for Wales Interactive and did some free work in my spare time for Irontown Interactive on their iPad game Iron. Both of these gave me experience and confidence in my work as well as some essential industry connections. Ultimately it helped land me my current job as Junior Environment Artist at Oysterworld! Dean's Development: April 2013

http://www.deanpaupe.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 23 April 2013. More Particles.More Props. Tomorrow. tomorrow is the first submittal deadline for the game, it allows the tutors to see where we are and give us feedback on the what we need to do for the remaining few weeks. I'm feeling fairly good with what I have done, but I feel like I should have a lot more done by now, I can never quite estimate how long everything takes. I have done a quick diffuse, specular and opacity for the Ice Bow:. Here is the effect so far:. I also made a snow footst...

Dean's Development: Get Over Here!

http://www.deanpaupe.blogspot.com/2014/07/get-over-here.html

Sunday, 6 July 2014. Quick update as I haven't done one in a while. I started doing a quick sculpting sketch which then ended up becoming a bit of a project. As for now I have other, bigger things in the works so I will have to leave this one, hopefully I can come back to finish it. This is my take on Scorpion from Mortal Kombat:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Cardiff, United Kingdom. I'm studying to become a 3D game artist as well as working with game engines. View my complete profile.

Dean's Development: May 2013

http://www.deanpaupe.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 May 2013. I can't actually believe I'm saying this but I have completed all of my university assignments. With the hand in of my major project work for the game Echoes I say goodbye to uni work all together. It seems like only yesterday I was convinced I would never get into uni at all and now it's finished. Really surreal stuff. Sunday, 12 May 2013. Here are the books:. The bow and arrow:. Thursday, 9 May 2013. As this project, and indeed my time at university, draws to a close I thought I...

Dean's Development: Final Renders

http://www.deanpaupe.blogspot.com/2013/05/final-renders.html

Sunday, 12 May 2013. There are a few final renders coming out of my major project work now as I prefer the marking showreel for Friday. Not all of them are finish, some still need ambient occlusion and some have unfinished textures but this is where they are so far. I have rendered them out as still frames to stop it from getting compressed twice and will not be putting them into a video until the showreel so I can only show still at the moment. Here are the books:. The bow and arrow:. A reflection of Fen.

Dean's Development: July 2013

http://www.deanpaupe.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 18 July 2013. Wow almost two months since my last blog post, I used to be so good at keeping these up to date. I've been so busy that it has been slightly neglected so I imagine this blog post is going to be a biggy. My last blog posted showed the end of my major project work at university, despite numerous difficulties the grade eventually came out as a 68, a high 2:1, which is what I wanted to get as this left me with a 2:1 overall for the year. The last week I graduated, woo hoo! Awesome Inc...

Artificial Puppetry: Major Project Evaluation

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2013/05/major-project-evaluation.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Wednesday, 22 May 2013. Usability is another area I would like to be better. A number of times I encountered animators not using features because they simply did not know they were there. I provided read-me files with explanations, but a text document is hard to remember when getting on with animation, so I want to look into having switches like IK/FK, global/local, and selection sets available from a custom UI. The Dragon was great fun to animate, and the only real issue I had h...

Artificial Puppetry: Website is live!

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2013/05/website-is-live.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Sunday, 12 May 2013. I got round to making a website at last, and its now live at joehornsby.co.uk. Its still lacking a proper showreel, as I'm finishing major project next week, so I'll be able to put together a better reel then. Also recently I tweaked the dragon rig to have a dynamic tail. Here's a peek at a test I ran with it:. Fun stuff, there should be tons of new stuff in the coming weeks as we come to the end of major project, so I'll post up as much as I can.

Artificial Puppetry: December 2012

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Monday, 31 December 2012. So, we're back on to pre-production now, with yet more drawing. Not my strongest suit, but so long as it helps me think about poses then its not too bad. I've been doing a few for each, but mostly been focussing on the attack animations for the player character, since they're the most fun. Links to this post. Sunday, 16 December 2012. We decided the project would best slot into Echoes if we used it to make puzzles. Fortunately this also gave us a goo...

Artificial Puppetry: Dragon Update

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2013/05/dragon-update.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Wednesday, 8 May 2013. At the suggestions of our tutors, we have added a big dragon to the end of the summer level, to act as a level boss. This means we need a few new animations, and fortunately a few people have agreed to take on a couple more. I've taken on the death animation for this big dragon, and I've been playing around with it. Here's what I have so far:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Artificial Puppetry: March 2012

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Saturday, 31 March 2012. Week 8: Baby steps. I'm allowing myself a slightly extended period on the walk forwards, as it should inform the other walks enough to speed them up considerably. Links to this post. Friday, 23 March 2012. Artificial Puppetry: First Submittal

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2013/05/first-submittal.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Friday, 26 April 2013. Time flies, and time you need to work on something even more so. First submittal has snuck up on us, and we're all trying to compile our work. This is our last chance to get the tutors to have a really good look at our work, and our last chance to get some in depth feedback. Most of my focus was on the rigging I've done, as that will go (mostly) unchanged between now and the hand-in. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Friends' blogs, sites I like etc.

Artificial Puppetry: November 2012

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Monday, 12 November 2012. Okay, so we're back on to Major Project Pre-production. I've been mostly working on thumbnails and rig setup for this, though progress has been slow, as I've not got a great deal done over reading week. I've got lots of thumbs to do, with a centaur, a humanoid faerie character, a dragon/lizard, a little girl, and a giant crab monster. Here's a few of the thumbs I've been doing today for an idea of what I'm up to. Links to this post. Links to this post.

Artificial Puppetry: April 2012

http://joehornsby.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

The blog of Joe Hornsby. Friday, 27 April 2012. Week 9: In the Game. Between bits of animation refinement, I've been in a scripting and UDK frenzy this week trying to get it working in the engine. It is all in and running now, and we're starting to get bits like placeholder weapons, but unfortunately there's some aspects that I just haven't been able to make work. Links to this post. Sunday, 22 April 2012. I've still got a considerable bit of script left to do, and seeing how long its taken me, I've deci...

Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Donut Falls Rappel, 030913. March 11, 2013. A day of three (or more) strikes. I’ve been wanting to rappel Donut Falls this winter. It’s a mile or two snowshoe into the falls, then a steep but easy scramble up to set an anchor from trees. About 30′ down a snow slope to the hole, then another 20′ through and into an ice cavern with a walk out exit. I mentioned three strikes. I know you’ll see many more. Time to watch the film, then continue reading. I rap...

Dean's Discussions

Friday, 10 July 2015. Final Fantasy IX's 15th Year Anniversary. So it was Final Fantasy IX's 15th birthday this week, so I thought I'd celebrate by writing a post. So it's a little bit late, but I wanted to write a bit about why it's one my favourite (if not my ABSOLUTE favourite) game of all time. It's not something I've ever really been good at, explaining why I love the things I do, but I'm going to attempt it none the less. It's the least I can do. Dean's Demonstrations

Thursday, 20 December 2012. Unity - Playmaker - Poison Damage. As I've been using Unity a lot in recent university projects I thought I should write up some of what I've done to show people how I managed to get certain parts working. For this I used Playmaker which is a visual scripting tool available on the Unity Store but everything can be done in code providing you know how, I'm not going to explain it like that here though as I am not a programmer and will end up confusing you all. To quickly set up ...
