Deconstructions

Saturday, July 13, 2013. This post first appeared as a column in the Good Living section of The Press, Christchurch. One of the tasks of retirement that presents itself with a creeping insinuation is protecting the standards of society. Being an elder statesperson somehow conveys that right, or it seems to because one has more time to think about them. It’s not exactly a matter of ‘Things weren’t like this in my time’ or ‘Back in the day…’ whenever the day was. Or something like that anyway. Again, there...

Deconstructions

http://deconstructions.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-delicate-truth.html

Saturday, July 13, 2013. 8216;A Delicate Truth’ is Le Carré at his best. He poses moral dilemmas of the type that only the English can face with the right degree of intellectual and emotional squirming. No quick wild west decisions here; rather, hours of agonizing about what to do as the balance between ‘what is right’ and self interest changes from moment to moment. Three years on and Kit Probyn has become Sit Christopher Probyn, having had a wonderful pre-retirement posting to the Caribbean and now liv...

http://deconstructions.blogspot.com/2013/07/al-alvarez-pondlife.html

Saturday, July 13, 2013. Al Alvarez. 2013. Poignant, funny, sad, penetrating, deadly honest, even a touch magnificent, “Pondlife” may well be Al Alvarez’s final book. He is now in his eighties and has been a poet, novelist, literary critic, rock-climber and international poker player. He lives in London’s Hampstead and for most of his life has swum regularly in the ponds of Hampstead and Highgate. He tells of the adrenaline rush that only this and sex can bring to him. He might have made his living as a ...

Deconstructions: November 2011

http://deconstructions.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Last week, in Christchurch, the front page of The Press informed us that the city is to have an 'iconic' gateway. The writers did have the decency to place the word iconic in quotation marks. Although this is a hint that they knew something or the other was not quite right about the word, it was not enough. Isn't this something that has to be earned by lengthy association? Posted by Kenneth Strongman. Friday, November 18, 2011. Bugger - ah, that's better. By the way, in the ...

Deconstructions: Doing time

http://deconstructions.blogspot.com/2013/07/doing-time.html

Saturday, July 13, 2013. This post first appeared as a column in the Good Living section of The Press, Christchurch. Being a retiree bears an uncanny resemblance to Alice having disappeared down the rabbit hole. It’s to do with time. At the best of times, time is a slippery concept. On the one hand it can be measured with a degree of exactitude enough to excite a pedant. Of course, the moment they know the time, that time. And herein lies the rub. But far more important than this is subjective time.

http://cherylbernstein.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-proper-photographer.html

Art, Life, TV, Etc. The low-brow and the high-minded. Monday, September 17, 2012. A photographer asked to take our picture yesterday. "I'm a proper photographer," he said. "Works in the public art gallery collection.". He was taking photos of Christchurch people in the ruined city. Have you lived here forever? He asked, looking down through the view finder. No," we said. Just one more, he said. I'll shift my camera and one more. Closer together. Last one coming. Done. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://cherylbernstein.blogspot.com/2012/07/blocked.html

Art, Life, TV, Etc. The low-brow and the high-minded. Thursday, July 5, 2012. Last night I watched TV3's premiere of The Block NZ. It's a DIY home renovation reality show based on an Australian model in which four couples compete to do up dilapidated houses (or as TV3's website had it, " depilated homes. Which makes it sound more like The GC. The first episode appeared to consist of a half-hour commercial for Bunnings. Disappointingly, I see they've now fixed the typo. Art, Life, TV, Etc. The low-brow and the high-minded. Wednesday, February 22, 2012. All over the city today, to commemorate the anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake, people have been placing flowers in the tens of thousands of road cones which cordon off broken areas of the footpath or which mark particularly bad potholes in the road. To celebrate Easter this year we made bunnies out of plastic milk bottles.
