Homebrewing in Hawaii: May 2014
http://homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Blending juices for cider. I made my first cider almost a year ago. And enjoyed the experience. It was incredibly easy to do, and I was happy with how the final product turned out: a refreshing drink on its own, and an interesting alternative to beer. Another interesting thing about the final drink was the way the aroma of the grapes carried through pretty much unchanged, despite the complete transformation of the grape flavor. It was fascinating, even slightly jarring, to brin...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: October 2013
http://homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 30, 2013. I just found out that Zymurgy published my account of exploding barleywine in the Last Drop section of the current issue. I haven't received my copy of the issue yet- always seems to take a few extra weeks to arrive in Hawaii- but I saw it in the online eZymurgy edition. If you're a member of the AHA (American Homebrewers Association) and you're logged on at the website, you can view the issue online here. Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Breaking brews into batches. Homebrewing in Hawaii: A book to drink beer to
http://homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-book-to-drink-beer-to.html
Tuesday, August 5, 2014. A book to drink beer to. Just a quick post to help spread the word about my new fiction offering. I've been working on a zombie apocalypse story, releasing it in segments as I went along, for about a year. I just recently finished the project, and stuck it all together as an omnibus edition. It's pretty massive- nearly 450 pages long, 140K words. For a limited time you can get it for 99 cents. Here's the book's description:. San Francisco is dead. Welcome to Zombie City. View my ...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: August 2014
http://homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 13, 2014. The downside is that the carbonation drops end up costing around 10X more than just buying sugar and mixing it in with the whole batch. But in the end that's still just an extra 10 cents a bottle. If I can do away with one more brewing difficulty, 10 cents a bottle is worth it to me. Thursday, August 7, 2014. Back in April I posted about making mead for marriage gifts. Tuesday, August 5, 2014. A book to drink beer to. Just a quick post to help spread the word about my new fict...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: April 2014
http://homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 13, 2014. Reflecting on the opening of Honolulu Beerworks. Tacky nightclubs and green-bottle beers. So that's what these brewpubs tried to give us: colored lights and black-painted ceilings and beer that tasted closer to mass-market brews than to real craft ale. None of those brewpubs succeeded. Two of them didn't even survive a single year. And it looked like they used plenty of PVC piping in their brewing system, which seems like a really bad idea to me. 1) He confirmed that Honolulu Beer...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: March 2014
http://homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 30, 2014. First of all, Aloha Beer is still in business. I'd been wondering about this because you can still find their bottles on the shelves of local stores despite the fact that the brewery's been shut down for nearly a year and the original business partnership behind Aloha Beer seemed to crash and burn like the Hindenburg. The sense that I get- mainly from unfounded supposition- is that the shit that went down with Aloha was mainly provoked by the other two guys. Well, I've been develo...

Lewybrewing: HomeBrew Equipment
http://www.lewybrewing.com/p/my-brewing-system.html
I started to homebrew in 2001 with a couple of friends. Since then my hobby has exploded into a obsession. Running out of outside opinions on where my beer was headed I entered my first competition in 2012. The National Homebrew Competition. Since then I try to enter only 2 competitions a year. Quaff's Americas Finest and NHC. Brand New. Look, no scratches! I started brewing in 2003 working on a Mr Beer kit my sister bought from a Skymall catalog. In late 2005 I ordered a MoreBeer. I have two refrigerati...

Lewybrewing: NHC Recap & My 2nd Round Results
http://www.lewybrewing.com/2013/09/nhc-recap-my-2nd-round-results.html
Wednesday, September 11, 2013. NHC Recap and My 2nd Round Results. As Philly fades into a memory I wanted to post my NHC 2nd round results. As expected I got hammered a little by the judges. If you follow me on Twitter. You might remember that I drank my remaining 12oz bottles of my Belgian Dark Strong before I got the NHC results. So I was left with opening a couple 750ml's and racking the beer into smaller bottles. Which overall went smoothly, but how much damage did I do to the beer? 13/20 Pleasant ma...
