3 weeks in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia - late September. Wednesday, October 12, 2005. We went for our first safari tour with Verner, an Afrikaan from the area. We immediately saw a pride of lions - only 4 females, no male and a number of young. Not a great picture today, but exciting to see them so close.

Had a brief visit to Franschhoek, where the monument to Huguenot immigrants who brought wine making techniques is a feature, along with the spectacular gardens. 3 weeks in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia - late September. Wednesday, October 12, 2005. September 20th - Stellenbosch. Don and Marjorie arrived last night. We left for the Paarl area, just north of the city,(S 33° 55.89 E 018° 51.79)for a tour of the wine area. Our first visit was to the Neerhlingshof Estate, founded in 1692 and recently restored by a retired Chair of Deutsche Bank.

3 weeks in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia - late September. Wednesday, October 12, 2005. We travelled twice every day on vehicles like this, in the early morning and then late afternoon. Note the lack of walls! The predators are accustomed to the sight of these trucks, but do not recognize them as prey. They know they are not threatening, smell terribly and make an awful noise. So. they just ignore them, as they would a tree or any other object.

Seven days in the Arabian Sea. Wednesday, March 23, 2005. We left Florence at 11h00 on a flight through Rome – don’t ask – to Frankfurt. Alitalia decided that we had too much weight (25 kg) so we were charged 275€. Yes, 11€ per kg! Took most of the day sitting in airports or planes to get to Frankfurt, and then stayed overnight at Steigenberger Airport Hotel, which we had been in before. Two months in Florence Due mesi a firenze. Tuesday, March 15, 2005. We are now finished our time in Florence. Below are thoughts on what to see and do if you are fortunate enough to visit here. Panama Canal/Costa Rica in 2006. Sunday, December 03, 2006. November 11th - South Beach. We flew to Miami on November 11, and had arranged for our friend Chris to meet us. Stayed at the South Seas hotel in South Beach, which was a last minute reservation - great location on the beach near the Delano, but. Sunday, May 20, 2007. May 11 - Canada to Zambia. Flew overnight to Frankfurt, south overnight to Johannesburg, then north to Lusaka. Hilary met me at the airport, had lunch in a lovely outdoor restaurant, then to the International hotel to register me on the rental car.
