Zambia 2007

Sunday, May 20, 2007. May 11 - Canada to Zambia. Flew overnight to Frankfurt, south overnight to Johannesburg, then north to Lusaka. Hilary met me at the airport, had lunch in a lovely outdoor restaurant, then to the International hotel to register me on the rental car. Unlike North America, there is little competition and bad roads, so the cost (US$110 per day) was high. I am staying at Bukhardt's property down the road from Hilary and Mark. The area is relatively upscale, and many properties have h...

Zambia 2007: May 14 - the Wilderness Experience

http://dghall6.blogspot.com/2007/06/may-14.html

Sunday, May 20, 2007. May 14 - the Wilderness Experience. Sleeping in the open is unusual, to say the least. This is the view outside my cabin, and no, there is not even a screen. Woke up at 0600 because I had slept enough, and although Lary says there are no carnivores around, I am not yet comfortable with this! The camp is located on top of a hill, with fabulous views, sitting on lava outcroppings.

Zambia 2007: May 17 - Dinner

http://dghall6.blogspot.com/2007/07/may-17-dinner.html

Sunday, May 20, 2007. May 17 - Dinner. Drinks at 1800 and dinner at 1930 with same group as last evening plus four women we saw at Charlie's Rock 2 nights earlier. I asked if they would ever go back, assuming everything sorted out, as the soil is much better there than anywhere else in Africa, and they both said NO. And then the bomb shell. Julie mentioned going to Vancouver to see relatives, so we asked, and she is a first cousin to Bryan Adams, emails back and forth often! How cool is that?

Zambia 2007: May 17 - the Hot Pool

http://dghall6.blogspot.com/2007/07/may-17-hot-pool.html

Sunday, May 20, 2007. May 17 - the Hot Pool. Had lunch and then decided to try out the famous hot pool. The Shiwa Ng'andu house is 20 kms from here over a fairly rough road, but Gore Browne apparently came often with friends to soak.

Zambia 2007: May 12 - Street kids

http://dghall6.blogspot.com/2007/06/may-12-street-kids.html

Sunday, May 20, 2007. May 12 - Street kids. This evening, we had wine and cheese at 1900, then attended a street kids talent show at Hindu Hall. It was really well done, with good dances, and heartfelt testimonials from the kids. Not easy to be up on stage with this content. Unfortunately, it wrapped up at 2300 (yes!

Abu Dhabi 2005

Seven days in the Arabian Sea. Wednesday, March 23, 2005. We left Florence at 11h00 on a flight through Rome – don’t ask – to Frankfurt. Alitalia decided that we had too much weight (25 kg) so we were charged 275€. Yes, 11€ per kg! Took most of the day sitting in airports or planes to get to Frankfurt, and then stayed overnight at Steigenberger Airport Hotel, which we had been in before. Very comfortable and convenient to the airport. March 16 - Frankfurt. Jim and Valerie's home. Quick run early this mor...

Southern Africa 2005

3 weeks in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia - late September. Wednesday, October 12, 2005. September 17th - Cape Town. Cape Town Botanical Garden. We arrive in Cape Town early, after an all night flight from Frankfurt. Watched 3 movies and dozed intermittently. Met the rest of the group for dinner - nice start to the tour. Cape Town is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Resident of the Vinelands Hotel. September 18th - Cape Town. Beach across from Table Mountain. The taxi back to t...

Florence 2005

Two months in Florence Due mesi a firenze. Tuesday, March 15, 2005. We are now finished our time in Florence. Below are thoughts on what to see and do if you are fortunate enough to visit here. Coffee and Lunch Bars. 1 Gilli, on Piazza della Repubblica 39, (055) 213896 but only for coffee outside when the weather is nice, as the food is poor and really expensive. 2 Caffè Giacosa, Via della Spada in Roberto Cavelli building on via dei Tornabuoni (055) 2776328. Our favourite spot for morning caffeine&#...

Egypt 2004

Sunday, May 02, 2004. Posted by Doug at 11:30 PM. April 22 - Arrive in Cairo. We flew in to Cairo from all points, and met at the Ramses Hilton in the heart of the City late that night. The trip from the airport was a wonderful introduction to the chaos of the City that never sleeps very few rules of the road are used, lane markings are redundant, horns are mandatory. Yikes. Posted by Doug at 11:00 PM. April 23rd - to Aswan. Posted by Doug at 10:30 PM. Six kilometres further up the river, we drove onto t...

Panama Canal/Costa Rica in 2006

Panama Canal/Costa Rica in 2006. Sunday, December 03, 2006. November 11th - South Beach. We flew to Miami on November 11, and had arranged for our friend Chris to meet us. Stayed at the South Seas hotel in South Beach, which was a last minute reservation - great location on the beach near the Delano, but. The lobby smelled musty, the room was worn out and there was nobody around - all for US$280! However, it was at least clean and quiet. Dinner at Spiga was mediocre, with too much garlic. The Crystal Sym...
