Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. December 7, 2015. January 13, 2016. Digital Transformation – No, just having a website doesn’t count! Recently a colleague asked me about Digital transformation, and how best to express it; and more importantly, what practical steps to take to start to achieve it. It is not achieved by simple having a website! Mr Cabbage man is still fundamentally selling the same product and expecting the same approach from the customer. The custom...

Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. November 8, 2016. November 14, 2016. It is a matter of opinion. Critically, to form the most educated opinion, the best opinion, we should seek out data from as many disparate contexts as possible, we need to consciously seek to put ourselves in other people’s shoes, something we don’t usually enjoy and hence rarely do. Now here is the really challenging point for all of us that hold an opinion: if we agree that opinion is a product of ...

Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. September 19, 2016. September 22, 2016. Start with the problem. I have often witnessed teams getting themselves into trouble by focusing more on activity than value. Many people, especially those lost in the middle of a formal hierarchy, are appeased by people doing stuff, it almost doesn’t matter what the team are doing as long as they are busy. It is back to that old attendance over performance metric. What does the widget enable?

Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. January 4, 2016. Improving Agile team performance. I have often been asked my opinions on teams that are not performing. Typically this is prompted by an observation of going through the motions on a Scrum ceremony that they have witnessed. I have seen the same situation a few times now so thought it worth sharing. So consider this team:. Given this there are some demotivational factors to look out for:. Component teams delivery teams t...

The Agile Developer – “they may take our projects, but they will never take our freedom!” | philagiledesign

Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. March 21, 2016. April 10, 2016. The Agile Developer they may take our projects, but they will never take our freedom! One of the underlying principles of Agile and consequently areas of activity in an Agile transformation programme is Empowerment. I am a big driver of empowerment in my explanations and preferred implementations of Agile delivery and it takes time. There is a risk in a non-committed Agile adoption that if you develop gen...

Agile is consuming itself | philagiledesign

Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. October 27, 2016. November 7, 2016. Agile is consuming itself. I suggest the dangers lie in three areas, the ignorant, the exploitative and the manipulative. In all cases the issue is misinterpretation of sound decent values, either innocently or more malevolently. So what is to be done? I am Phil Thompson, an Agile Consultant, have worked at many places in many industries and with many people, mostly in Europe, mostly in the UK, mostly...

Thoughts and musings on Agile software delivery from the front line. February 23, 2016. February 25, 2016. An Estimate is a guess in a suit, you can do better than that. New project, new team, new opportunities, a fresh start for everyone, a room full of hope and optimism. Then someone senior comes in and asks for an estimate for the full scope of work and things start to spiral downwards. So firstly why are we so poor at estimating with the software industry? So what is the solution? Existing and well d...
