Duncan in Malawi: May 2008
http://duncaninmalawi.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
The journey of a young volunteer with Engineers Without Borders in Southern Africa. Friday, May 16, 2008. Chichewa and Value Chains. Pang'ono pang'ono mudzalakhula Chichewa! Thursday, May 15, 2008. However, my jump to agriculture happened only very recently, and since my boss at IITA has been out of the office for the past week, my specific role will not be finalized until tomorrow. Things sometimes move slowly, and in the meantime I will have to be patient and adaptable. Saturday, May 3, 2008. So it is ...
Duncan in Malawi: The Bat
http://duncaninmalawi.blogspot.com/2008/07/bat.html
The journey of a young volunteer with Engineers Without Borders in Southern Africa. Wednesday, July 9, 2008. The latrine near the factory is a small, mud brick structure with a neat, rectangular hole cut into the floor. The chamber beneath is fairly large and apparently cave-like enough to have attracted an inhabitant. I vowed to never return at night…. 8230;Until the next night when digestive troubles once again had me bolting for the latrine. Out of bet! Toilet paper (I’m so glad I brought extra)!
Duncan in Malawi: August 2008

The journey of a young volunteer with Engineers Without Borders in Southern Africa. Monday, August 4, 2008. Madam Domasi, a neighbor to the cassava flour factory, has a small business selling lunch and snacks at the market. Always looking to supplement my meager volunteer stipend, (and the opportunity to penetrate the vendor community in search of lower prices) I managed to get a job with the Madam as a donut vendor. Initially, I set up shop on a corner lot between some clothing vendors (trousers! A mzun...

Binnu in Malawi: June 2008
http://binnuinmalawi.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Life and work on an Engineers Without Borders placement in Malawi. Sunday, June 22, 2008. 8221; “Zaka zingati? 8221; “Uli standard chiyani? 8221; Basic questions that give you no important information but totally get the kids giggling. As I see her getting more comfortable and starting to volunteer information, and as I start taking a shortcut path with her, I realize I am getting accustomed to Malawi. Or maybe the Malawi I know is getting accustomed to me. Of an infant democracy (about 35 years old).
Binnu in Malawi: Tying Things Together

Life and work on an Engineers Without Borders placement in Malawi. Sunday, August 17, 2008. 8220;And now I would like to invite Miss Binnu to come to the front to dance.”. John getting the crowd excited about hand-washing soap on the Sanitation Marketing Day. The Sanitation Marketing Day – what a day that was! Wow, what a shift from the traditional idea of just digging boreholes and handing out free water purification systems. It was a great idea, and it gave the group a specific focus. But when I as...

Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure: Entrepreneurs
http://whats-she-ghana-do.blogspot.com/2008/08/entrepreneurs.html
Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure. Sunday, August 3, 2008. Hacking out a living in a developing country is no easy task—if you are lucky enough that personal circumstances do not complicate it, macro-economic trends probably do. Nevertheless, I have seen some inspiring examples of people taking their skills, talents, and assistance and turning them into business. These are some of them. Binnu in Malawi: Oh There They Are! (the mud huts)

Life and work on an Engineers Without Borders placement in Malawi. Friday, September 5, 2008. Oh There They Are! So what is poverty? What is it that I have been trying to battle for the last few months? LWS: I think the more appropriate question for me is who is poverty? I have seen many different people who are struggling to overcome challenges that are preventing them from leading the life that they aspire to. To quote my friend Graham Lettner, “I see [poverty]. One of the sisters with whom I am living...

Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure: Exchange Rate
http://whats-she-ghana-do.blogspot.com/2008/08/exchange-rate.html
Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure. Thursday, August 14, 2008. Just as I gave up things to come to. I find myself cataloguing the things I'm giving up in leaving it. I traded subculture for tribal culture; now I pass from not being allowed to show my thighs to having to shave my legs. I'm exchanging good white wine and a night life for bathing under the Milky Way. Sincere greetings from strangers for impersonal pedestrian safety; the sweeps of the Gambaga escarpment for the peaks of the. But as I leave.

Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure. Saturday, May 24, 2008. Last Day in Tamale. The View from the Bus: the busy streets of Tamale. The MetroMass bus station: as many people as Tokyo, in one eighth the space. Today I accidentally drew a crowd of 20- refusing a marriage proposal with the fact that I am "married" led me to bring out my photo book, and answer four-dozen impassioned questions about snow, busses, the homeless, and whether they could marry my sister (thats you, Steph! Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure. Friday, June 27, 2008. Colour, Consistency, Frequency, Volume. Photos of my precious latrine pending internet reliability). This is for you, Stan. You all know I do it. You do it too. You all knew it was going to be a challenge resplendent in all aspects of my life here. For my sake and yours, lets talk about it. Urine is a completely different story for another day, but suffice it to say I try to calm myself with the reminder that it's largely water, ammonia, and sterile.

Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure: April 2008
http://whats-she-ghana-do.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
Notes from a Ghanaian Adventure. Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Departing from Canada. And the Western Monkey Is Coming With Me! Look at that guy! Won by me as a door prize at the '08 UWO Wine and Cheese, hidden in a glove compartment for a month and a half and then surrendered to the Windsor Chapter as our faithful, fuzzy mascot, and now, dressed up and lent -back- to me as a cuddle buddy on the trip! I was worried I was gonna have nothing for my sappy, homesick ass to hold onto! When are you going to Africa?

Duncan in Peru
I am off to Peru for 8 weeks with PwC's Ulysses programme. I will be working with an organisation that helps the families who live on Peru's rubbish dumps set up recyling businesses - pulling themselves out of the poverty trap and improving the environment at the same time. Sunday, August 13, 2006. Our clean up day in San Jose went well, we collected 40 sacks of rubbish including three dead dogs. Posted by Duncan @ 6:03 PM. The sounds of silence.
