Guatemala - Developing World Connections

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Guatemala: San Miguel Dueñas: Aug 4 2015. While working on various projects, we demonstrated several signs of a strong team. Especially with projects like these, where the ultimate goal is to help the less fortunate, a team that is constantly bickering over what to do and how to do it won't accomplish much. Therefore I am grateful and impressed that our team works so well together. Leaders can change everything about a group and I'm glad my uncle is our leader. Open Windows wan...

Guatemala - Developing World Connections: March 19: Day 5

http://www.dwcvolunteersinguatemala.blogspot.com/2014/03/march-19-day-5.html

Thursday, March 20, 2014. March 19: Day 5. We had another good day in Guatemala. We started off with the usual breakfast at Fernando's, and loaded the bus on time to get to San Miguel Duenas. Today was hot, and we started work right away. At the "Das Chavos" work site, we spent most of the morning chiseling blocks and making re bar, while our builders continued to add to the walls. At the "Dirt Bags" site, concrete was made, blocks were hauled and some time was spent with local kids. Talk to you tomorrow!

Wednesday, March 13, 2013. March 12th: A final reflection. The hardest thing after that was packing up and hugging the family goodbye. We all made connections in some way with the families we helped here. We are coming back with a changed perspective, fuller hearts and are looking forward to seeing our friends and families again! Wednesday, August 19, 2015. Guatemala: San Miguel Dueñas: August 2015. The team spent time installing new clean burning stoves in homes to replace open burning kitchen fires. This is what many families are using: an open burning kitchen cooking area. What a difference an eco-stove can make. Here are some photos of the eco-stoves that we installed. No more indoor fire smoke to make people ill. Thursday, August 13, 2015. Guatemala: San Miguel Dueñas: Aug 4 2015. Teamwork is key when working in a large grou...

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Guatemala - San Miguel Dueñas: August 3 2015. After a weekend of travel and getting acquainted with new team members and reacquainted with former team members, we headed out to Open Windows early this morning. We were all eager to get our hands dirty and no one was disappointed. By the end of the day we were all covered in bits of rock, dirt and sweat. A good first day was had by all. Guatemala - Developing World Connections: March 22: Day 8

http://www.dwcvolunteersinguatemala.blogspot.com/2014/03/march-22-day-8-our-last-full-day.html

Monday, March 24, 2014. March 22: Day 8. Well, time flies - we only have one full day left in Antigua before we are homeward bound bright and early Monday morning. Casa Santa Domingo is a beautiful hotel that was once a monastery. The workers were picking petals off roses and putting them into buckets of water, and candles were lit everywhere. There was a small art gallery on the inside, and monuments that date back to the 16th/17th century. We enjoyed our relaxing day, and are now back at the hotel wind...

Sunday, February 8, 2015. February 8, 2015: Arrival to Phnom Pen. After about 32 to 36 hours of total travel, we arrive at Phnom Pehn around noon, just a little weary eyed and jet lagged. Greeted on arrival by Vy (or gracious host) and Betty. Betty arrived a day ahead (without luggage) and took in few sites (Royal Palace, national museum, Olympic stadium, Wat Bo, killing fields and genocide museum before meeting us on Sunday). Our home in Kep for next two weeks will be the Spring Valley Resort. Our wonde...

Monday, February 9, 2015. February 9, 2015: Ferris Wheels and Muddy Feet! First day on project started with a carnival type atmosphere. What started as a photo opportunity, turned into an unexpected early morning ferris wheel ride at a small carnival on route to Odong community. Then it was on to begin construction of two irrigation gates. The gates will be used to manage water flow while providing access across the many irrigation channels. DWC Volunteer Team Leader. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Sri Lanka - Last Day: Celebrating Together. The day is hot and beautiful as Team 11 sets out together to inspect all the worksites. For the last 10 days we were divided into three teams rotating daily through all locations so it is very exciting to have a chance to take a good look around and see all that has been accomplished. This site started with a few holes in the ground and it was back breaking work to dig, build a complete foundation and support columns and start to brick th...

Monday, January 31, 2011. And then the wheel came off and other adventures… our final days in Sri Lanka. The rest of the team went to the job site to spend a final day trying to finish a few tasks; painting (a lovely Sri Lankan yellow color that is growing on us), bricking two half walls, pouring five more columns…. All was accomplished despite the skies opening up after lunch with a torrential downpour! About 45 minutes into the drive, the wheel came off (literally) one of the vans. The driver got n...

Monday, November 19, 2012. November 10th: Safe arrival in Haiti. We arrived safely after a long night at the Miami airport. We spent the first week in Deslandes and got to work on the second building stucco coat. It is very hot and we did get some late afternoon rain for a couple of days and then a huge downpour Thursday evening which made the walk out quite muddy. India - Developing World Connections

Wednesday, May 25, 2016. View from a volunteer team leader. Ednesday, 25 May 2016. Wednesday, 25 May 2016. Water Harvesting Project, Rajasthan. When Developing World Connections offered me the opportunity to lead. A team to Bhindar, Rajasthan, I leapt at the chance of returning to India. I had been there many times before helping home owners build a new. Life with a solid roof over their heads. But this project was different. It was not house building for one or two families but building a sub-surface.
