Haiti - Developing World Connections

Monday, November 19, 2012. November 10th: Safe arrival in Haiti. We arrived safely after a long night at the Miami airport. We spent the first week in Deslandes and got to work on the second building stucco coat. It is very hot and we did get some late afternoon rain for a couple of days and then a huge downpour Thursday evening which made the walk out quite muddy. We are now back in Verrettes and will be doing work on the property there using the materials we bought today in St. Marc. At around 3:00pm t...

Haiti - Developing World Connections: April 2011

http://dwcvolunteersinhaiti.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Cite Soleil, Haiti: Our final day. On the side you can see a picture of Jason dismantling a corner form while he sits on a new rafter. Another shot of the installation of the first tin roof section; the gaps between rafters are so wide, and the tin so thin, it's a challenge to straddle the material, measure and drive nails:. Haiti - Developing World Connections: Cite Soleil, Haiti: Working on the project and touring the area

http://dwcvolunteersinhaiti.blogspot.com/2011/04/cite-soleil-haiti-our-continued-work-on.html

Thursday, April 14, 2011. Cite Soleil, Haiti: Working on the project and touring the area. We returned to the rest of the volunteers and spent the rest of the day forming up the reinforcements around the top of one of the homes we are building and then mixed concrete and poured it into the rebar. The day was complete and we returned, dusty, sweaty and looking forward to a dip in the pool. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). DWC Volunteer Experience: Haiti. View my complete profile. Monday, April 27, 2015. April 25: Day 7 - Day Off and MUCH Deserved. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country offering many different options for R R. Here is how our weary and sore workers enjoyed the day. A group headed to the beach and ocean at Palm Paradise – a favourite destinations for TRIP Canada volunteers. It was a glorious day. Richard and Joan went to tea country and were thrilled with the climbing, plantations and magnificent scenery. A wonderful day for everyone. DWC/TRIP Canada Team Leader. April 2...

Monday, January 31, 2011. And then the wheel came off and other adventures… our final days in Sri Lanka. The rest of the team went to the job site to spend a final day trying to finish a few tasks; painting (a lovely Sri Lankan yellow color that is growing on us), bricking two half walls, pouring five more columns…. All was accomplished despite the skies opening up after lunch with a torrential downpour! About 45 minutes into the drive, the wheel came off (literally) one of the vans. The driver got n...

Monday, April 27, 2015. April 24: Day 6 - Tired and Happy. Day four of hard work and our muscles are aching! It’s another sunny hot day here in paradise. We all celebrated Kim’s 25th (? Birthday last night where the staff at the hotel made her a beautiful cake and sang happy birthday with much enthusiasm. Everyone made her feel so special on a day that she was celebrating without any of her family. DWC/TRIP Canada Team Leader. Sri Lanka, April 2015. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Sri Lanka - Last Day: Celebrating Together. The day is hot and beautiful as Team 11 sets out together to inspect all the worksites. For the last 10 days we were divided into three teams rotating daily through all locations so it is very exciting to have a chance to take a good look around and see all that has been accomplished. This site started with a few holes in the ground and it was back breaking work to dig, build a complete foundation and support columns and start to brick th...

We are divided into three work teams and rotating around three sites. So while we are creating a team identity, we are also sharing stories about all sites. Each of us takes great interest and pride in how all sites are progressing. Team 3 – yes, this team was also parging! Our evening was capped with a perfect dinner on the beach – sand and ...

It took all my energy to not reach out and give them group hugs! I will never forget those smiling faces. Most of us take computers for granted in North America, yet here in Sri Lanka, they are over the moon when we bring 1 single computer for a whole school. Tangalle, Sri Lanka: Memories. Monday, April 27, 2015. April 23: Day 5 - Hardest Day Yet. It seems that many of us felt that this was the most challenging work day yet. Was it because of the crazy hot temperatures or the fact that day 3 fell on hump day? But just for today, there will be no mention of parging or pounding or painting or lifting or measuring or cutting or sanding or sifting or sweeping! Our toughest day so far became one of our best! Friday, April 27, 2012. April 25: Closing ceremony and a tearful goodbye. It's with a heavy heart, an achy back (from all the hard work) and a sore head (from the arrack - local coconut whiskey), that I write my last blog post. The time has flown by here, as it always seems to, and yesterday was an emotional last day. Sri Lanka, April 2012. Monday, April 23, 2012. April 23: A bizarre bird and bathroom situation, sunburns, and rain can't dampen our spirits. Sri Lanka, April 2011. Thursday, April 19, 2012.

Guatemala - Developing World Connections

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Guatemala: San Miguel Dueñas: Aug 4 2015. While working on various projects, we demonstrated several signs of a strong team. Especially with projects like these, where the ultimate goal is to help the less fortunate, a team that is constantly bickering over what to do and how to do it won't accomplish much. Therefore I am grateful and impressed that our team works so well together. Leaders can change everything about a group and I'm glad my uncle is our leader. Open Windows wan...

When Developing World Connections offered me the opportunity to lead. A team to Bhindar, Rajasthan, I leapt at the chance of returning to India. I had been there many times before helping home owners build a new. Life with a solid roof over their heads. But this project was different. Kenya - Developing World Connections

Thursday, November 14, 2013. November 14: A Group Effort and a View of Mt. Kenya. Our work was over by early afternoon but not at our choosing, and all of us felt we had not given enough of our time to the day's task or to the project, but these things are not within our control. So it was back to the lodge for a late lunch and a cold beer or two, some reading and a little volleyball. Kenya, November 2013. November 13: A Tour of the Community.
