The stories of a life and a love of food…. September 7, 2010. I generally associate lamb with gyros – and while they are delicious, they aren’t the most high class addition to a dinner table. Plus, I don’t have a spit that I can roast and baste an enormous wheel of meat … Continue reading →. Yummy Mac and Cheese. September 7, 2010. September 7, 2010. September 7, 2010. The stories of a life and a love of food…. Lamb Kebabs →. Yummy Mac and Cheese. September 7, 2010. I teach in a middle school in the Bronx. When we have potlucks at school, the kids all bring their parent’s mac and cheese, and we have a potluck that consists of 5 huge trays of thick, cheesy macaronis, and lots of packaged cookies and potato chips. I did much better with this recipe, which is very simple, and, to be honest, much better than my original. Breadcrumbs w/ 1T butter. Boil a big pot of water.

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Wednesday, December 21, 2011. There are certain moments that still touch you, no matter how many times you have seen them. There is a transparency to this boy - it’s almost pathetic how clear his motivation for misbehaving is. If someone doesn’t understand, he will all but tell them. What if no parent wants you? Why do some parents just not love their kids? Outwardly, he is arrogant and reckless. He is proud of his behaviors, speaks openly about his love for ...

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Wednesday, June 27, 2012. By some terrible mistake, it seems that Barnes and Noble has stopped carrying 'Deenie' by Judy Blume. Luckily enough, it's still on their list of books that they can order, and I did so, waiting eagerly for it to come in so that I could devour it, and remember what about it was so special when I read it as a thirteen year old. Perhaps there is a reason that Barnes and Noble no longer has it in stock - maybe Kady will find it outdated and...

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Sunday, April 1, 2012. For those of you who are not on the cutting edge of fashion, allow me to be your guide. It's called SWAG, and while it's not attractive, it's certainly hot right now. Within the last couple of weeks, my school has been given a make-over, with students appearing in full SWAG gear at school. The SWAG Staples are as follows:. 1 Denim - lots of denim. Preferably a jacket and jeans, or perhaps a denim vest. November 7, 2012 at 8:51 AM. 7:30 am &...

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Friday, September 19, 2008. 7:30 am – I arrive at school, pick up my attendance sheets, and head into my room. I always enter my room cautiously, kicking open the door, and then surveying the immediate area before sticking in my hand to flip the lights on – making sure that there are no roaches lurking. Yesterday I put out sticky traps to catch roaches – it was what the school said I should do. Today I glanced nervously in that direction…. I start telling them wh...

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Sunday, July 1, 2012. I went to the doctor on the first day that school was out, in an attempt to discover the cause of my recent headaches and fatigue. It was my first time in years going to the doctor, and I was happily surprised by the experience. He sat with me for forty-five minutes, asking questions about my relatively benign symptoms, and seeming genuinely interested in my responses. 8221; he asked me, and seeing my less that receptive expression, quickly ...

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Teaching in my classroom is like guerrilla warfare. There are no straight lines or consistent methods that work. Our kids come to us each day with a pile of challenges, anger, and resistance that we spend the day breaking down, trying to pound knowledge and enthusiasm and excitement into their heads. That’s out of their reach – or so it seems to people who have been in poverty for several generations, whose parents and grand...It’...

Stories from a school in the south bronx. Thursday, November 18, 2010. Next door, Wendy, my current partner, was having much more success. Her children had a history of bad behavior, and had IEPs that required them to be in a severely restrictive setting. And yet, parents were rushing to help her in any way that they could. When she suggested that the child be punished, they gave her high fives her in agreement. My first year, hearing the child get scolded represented a victory for me – I really be...

Yesterday, after the news broke of the school shooting in Connecticut, I received an email from a girl, now in the tenth grade. 8220; Hi Miss Klein how are you? I hope everything is ok. For me everything was ok until I came across a VERY SAD STORY -. It looks like the more we try to help and better the environment it get worst in some other way. I thought a...

The Edible Library
Recipes and more from each of the cookbooks in my library. Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Blue Cheese Pasta/Brioche Bombe. It is about time I reported back here on the world of food, or at least the state of my cookbooks. Simply put, I have too many for the allotted shelf space I have, and thus must figure out how to get another bookcase (for them alone, so the books here that happen to be about things besides. Food can get some much-needed shelf space as well). First – blue cheese pasta. Is that all it is?

Edible Library – Head Chef to House Husband
Head Chef to House Husband. Head Chef to House Husband. Moving to the country, gonna eat me a lot of peaches. I’ll start with a familiar story… Kerry (wife and restaurant champion or vice versa), Elsie (child and supreme ruler) and me (Chef and entrepeneur, recently house husband) living in suburbia, working a couple of jobs, trying to getting a business up and running, small child being harried from creche to childcare to grandparents and so…. Too much choice leads to much procrastination. When I was 12...

Where food, faith, and creativity collide. An Open Letter to College Students: Your Professor Is NOT Your Employee. October 03, 2016. Last night I had a conversation with a friend and coworker who was complaining about one of his college professors because she wasn’t very approachable and seemed irritated when he came to see her during office hours. At first I was sympathetic to his plight, but then these words came out of his mouth:. I nearly choked on my salad. Teaching is quite different because it is...
