He loved the people of Nepal and he spent a lot of his time and his own money building hospitals and schools for these people. What he is most known for. Sir Edmund Hillary and his wife Louise had three children- Peter, Sarah and Belinda. His wife, Louise and their youngest daughter, Belinda were killed when their airplane crashed on takeoff in Katmandu. The family was going to spend a year in Nepal building a school for the children. Sir Edmund Hillary's best friend, Peter Mulgrew, was killed in a plane crash in Antarctica. Sir Edmund was supposed to go but he had other work so Peter took his place. Create a free website.

What he is most known for. 20 July 1919-born in Auckland, New Zealand. 1935- at age 16 he gets interested in mountains. 1936-43- he works as a bee keeper with his father. 1939-climbs his first mountain, Mt. Oliver in the Southern Alps. 1944-he enlists in the New Zealand Air Force in World War II. 1945-badly burnt in an accident in Fiji while in the Air Force. 1947-climbs Mt.
