Wednesday, 27 November 2013. What a difference a year makes - smartphones and tablets come of age. In August 2012 I wrote a post entitled " Computers for serious work - tablets and smartphones just don't cut the mustard. Does this still stand? No I find myself producing more and more on my tablet and doing SOME work on my smartphone. What has changed? The input options, going beyond the tiny keyboard on the screen, have made it possible to note-take and post. SwiftKey. Is now much more accurate. Observin...
EdTech - Insights: Chromebooks becoming a real option
http://edtech-insights.blogspot.com/2014/05/chromebooks-becoming-real-option.html
Thursday, 8 May 2014. Chromebooks becoming a real option. It seems that many schools are opting for Chromebooks. We have been looking at this aspect from both educational and financial viewpoints. The financial one seems obvious - Chromebooks are extremely good value for money, almost tablet costs for much better than notebook operation. There is a legacy problem from equipment that works on Windows machines, including some laboratory and simulation software, video/audio editing programmes and the like.

Monday, 29 April 2013. Maintenance of systems and equipment - an example from this school. Maintenance of systems and equipment is essential. Maintaining what we have got, extending its useful life and adapting to our ever changing needs is expensive but necessary. We try to work with a $36,000 budget per year and here you can see where we spend it. The translation below refers to the list in order. Keyboards, mouses, memory and various parts. Licenses, renewal and subscriptions. Links to this post.
EdTech - Insights: January 2014

Saturday, 25 January 2014. Rhizomes vs the establishment - #rhizo14. Posted this originally on the Rhizomatic Learning Google community but wanted to keep Bonnie Stewart. S post here too. So I can refer to it. She posted this two years ago during the #change11 MOOC and I wondered what has changed since then - the idea of independent, open, self directed learning in schools seems to be much more viable today than it did then. What has changed? So, what has changed? For reminding me of Bonnie's #change11.

Education - Good Practice: Learning Styles - a debunked but pervasive myth
http://education-goodpractice.blogspot.com/2015/06/learning-styles-debunked-but-pervasive.html
Saturday, 20 June 2015. Learning Styles - a debunked but pervasive myth. S "How to respond to Learning Style believers" is a useful summary of the main arguments surrounding the Learning Styles myth. She links to Tesia Marshik's TEDx talk. However, I preferred (PREFERRED) to listen to Marshik's video, glancing at the odd slide she presented. She told it as a story (could that be why we like TED Talks so much? All this does not mean that we should use one teaching style! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Education - Good Practice: Video and Audio - Taming Linear Learning
http://education-goodpractice.blogspot.com/2014/05/video-and-audio-taming-linear-learning.html
Wednesday, 7 May 2014. Video and Audio - Taming Linear Learning. TED Talks are great sources of inspiration. But I often can recall a couple of the impact ideas and not much else. TED Talks are told as a story, they often have an intentional emotional impact, but the actual reasoning and important detail remains in the goo of our brains. So, I welcome tedsketchnotes. A pictorial summary of TED Talks, produced by Stefani Bachetti. Here is an example of the Daniel Pink talk on Motivation:.

Wednesday, 3 May 2017. Webo-plasmosis - can you smell the cat's urine? Thank you Michael Caulfield. For another post in the Traces series. The idea that the way we manage our social-media life is pliable and actually mould-able by the medium itself is compelling. Using a cat toxoplasma example, he warns that, just like the mice from that example who no longer smell the cat's urine, increasingly we no longer worry about the way we share details of our lives. This is his list to check whether you have.
