Elma's Past in Pictures. In 1845 Clark W. Hurd, Joseph Briggs and along with Allen and Hiram Clark dug a mill race from Buffalo Creek and constructed a dam to divert water for the purpose of the operation of a saw mill. Elma's Past in Pictures. Copy61 General Store Bowen Rd. The 1800s brought Clark W. Hurd and Joseph B. Briggs to this settlement. They acquired land next to the Buffalo Creek to build a dam, dig a mill race, and construct a saw mill. Several names were suggested, but none were satisfactory, until someone said " There is a big elm tree at the crossing of Bowen Rd. and Clinton. Elma's Past in Pictures. It was in 1846 when Clark W. Hurd built his home in a settlement that would later known as Elma. Mr. Hurd would become an important figure in the founding of our great community. In March of 1857 a spirited meeting was held in his home to form the Town of Elma. It was in this home where Elma's first town officials were decided. Dedicated to the residents of Elma and ceremoniously turned over to the Town of Elma to serve as a Town Museum for generations to come. To view the report.
