Building the Mill

The Settlers who formed our great community during the 1800s have long passed away. They made their mark on the world while here. We have honored them for their trials, difficulties, labors, and the hopes and fears that they encountered through life in establishing the Town of Elma. Map of Elma Village during the 1800s, shows the location of the Hurd and Briggs Sawmill on the mill race. Also shown on the same location is a Shingle and Cheese Box factory.

The photo ( upper left) shows a foundation block from the original Hurd and Briggs Saw Mill. These foundations were not removed but used to support the newly constructed replica of the saw mill. Elma's Past in Pictures. In 1845 Clark W. Hurd, Joseph Briggs and along with Allen and Hiram Clark dug a mill race from Buffalo Creek and constructed a dam to divert water for the purpose of the operation of a saw mill. 2015 Masthead Home page. Elma's Past in Pictures. Pictured above is the business district at Elma Center about 1913. From the left, Homer Hoyt's general store, Joseph Geyer's blacksmith shop and livery stable, Bill Beicke's saloon, Frank Slade's seed store and Peter Grader's saloon. On September 25, 1922 a fire gutted the entire block. A store, house, garage and restaurant were rebuilt on the site but everything except the store was destroyed during the fall of 1936.
